A brand-new, virtual reality spinning class is taking the city by storm. Here’s what you need to know
Dubai prides itself on being one of the most technologically advanced cities in the world, but the arrival of a futuristic new workout at GFX gym in Business Bay takes the cosmic cake.
Created by global fitness brand Les Mills, The Trip promises one of the most intriguing classes we’ve seen for quite some time – and we’re not alone in thinking so. At the time of press, a video of the class posted to Time Out Dubai’s Facebook page last week had been viewed more than 70,000 times and received in excess of 1,400 likes, 550 comments and 500 shares.
Positioned as a virtual reality spinning class, participants embark on a fast-paced digital journey (that looks like something straight out of Tron), facing a cinema-standard screening and enveloped in music pumped out by state-of-the-art speakers. Designed to be a high-intensity workout, it combines sprint bursts with periods of rest as you prepare for the next part of your journey.
Crammed into just 40 minutes, the intensity of the workout promises benefits ranging from elongated calorie burn to high fat burn and, obviously, a shorter exercise session that can be built into a busy schedule.
There are apparently also upsides to the transportive nature of the setting. Research published by the American College of Sports Medicine claims immersive workouts can mask how hard your body is working, making it feel easier and allowing you to continue for longer periods of time.
The Business Bay gym will be the first studio in the UAE to host The Trip, but plans are under way to bring the class to more studios across Dubai in the coming month, including to Talise Fitness at Madinat Jumeirah.
In the meantime, you can try your first session for free at GFX – with classes Dhs85 thereafter (though packages are available). We’ll see you in the studio… From Dhs85. GFX, F52 Bay Avenue, Business Bay (04 425 5940).
