Where would we be without Willis Carrier’s great invention – the modern air conditioning unit? Let’s face it, summer in the UAE would be completely unbearable if it wasn’t for A/C in every conceivable enclosed space. But our reliance on them means that they’re likely to give up at any minute, leaving us in a real hot mess.
With that in mind we take a look at some of the city’s recommended handy people, so whether your A/C is on the blink or you find yourself halfway up the E11 with a flat battery, these are the numbers to have on speed dial.
Jim Will Fix It JWFI is a Jack of all trades – if you need a plumber, carpenter, DIY, A/C servicing or painting and decorating at home it can take care of it. The team pride themselves on good customer service and understanding the needs and concerns of the expat community. The technicians here all have either a professional qualification or more than three years’ experience.
JWFI covers all areas of Dubai and offers a full A/C servicing package, which includes a deep clean of the unit using a special power spray to remove sand from the external filter, electrical and blockages checks, cleaning and disinfecting of the internal filters. Must Have Maintenance An all-round service with a team that can take care of everything, from air-conditioning to carpentry. The firm covers all areas of Dubai, and also have clients in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
All staff are qualified to diploma level in their trade discipline and are experienced in working in homes and offices. Must Have Maintenance offers a 24-hour emergency call out service, so if you wake up in the middle of the night knee-deep in water, they’ll be at your door within two hours. There is a charge for any necessary parts, but if you purchase the gold package from Dhs200 per month, spare parts are included, you are guaranteed a two hour response to your call as well an annual servicing of your A/C, electrics and plumbing. The company is currently offering 20 percent off annual maintenance cover until the end of August. Dhs200 standard call out fee for the first hour, then Dhs150 per hour thereafter. Dial-a-Battery Four wheels rule in Dubai, so it’s useful to know who to call if you jump in the car and it won’t start. Dial-a-Battery offers home and roadside assistance and aims to get you back in gear within an hour. The service is 24/7 and covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. They’ll even recycle your old battery for you. There is a minimum Dhs100 call out fee, which is only charged if the battery cannot be changed. The response guys will carry out checks on your alternator, starter motor and battery, but bear in mind that they’re not authorised for any other mechanical faults, although they can offer advice. Howdra Maids and maintenance company Howdra is British-owned and can help with all manner of domestic affairs, from a live-in-maid to a painter-decorator. Howdra requires at least a day’s notice to book in the job, so it’s better if you have a few jobs that need to be done at once. Most of the tradesmen are from the Philippines and were trained there and have also undergone training with the company’s owners.
