Forms and subjects such as oil, pearls and rhythm inspire Emirati artist Jamal Habroush Al Suwaidi’s work. But it’s the rich culture and heritage of his home country that influences him most. Arabic calligraphy, in particular, forms the basis of his new sculpture, Love-Red, which has just been installed in Terminal 1’s Concourse D as part of the airport’s ongoing artDXB initiative.
The piece was originally inspired by the work of American artist Robert Indiana – one of Al Suwaidi’s favourites – who is associated with the pop art movement and best known for his iconic LOVE series. The word “love” here, however, has been translated to the Arabic “hobb” and Al Suwaidi uses calligraphy to represent his native language.
Elsewhere, at Terminal 3 Arrivals, you’ll find Al Suwaidi’s striking gold sculpture My Dallah, made entirely out of fibreglass. It’s an abstract representation of an Arabian coffee pot and cup, known as the “dallah” and “fenjan”, which are important components of the UAE culture, symbolising “originality, kindness and hospitality”, the artist explains.
“I like combining letters with other forms from nature, with the aim of sharing the beauty of our language with others,” Al Suwaidi states. “When I was a student, I dreamt of creating art that highlights our rich cultural history.”
It was at the tender age of 14 that Al Suwaidi began his artistic journey and, ever since, he has been combining aspects of the UAE’s nature, history and heritage with concepts arising from change and prosperity in his work. His prestigious pieces can now be found in private and public collections across the world, and two are right here.
So, if you want a true taste of what the UAE and its endlessly diverse cultural landscape has to offer, we suggest you feast your eyes upon these. Terminal 3 Arrivals (My Dallah); Terminal 1, Concourse D (Love-Red).
