UAE movie tells story of two teenagers growing up in Ras Al Khaimah
This homegrown movie has already whipped up some buzz after it was revealed at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival last month. Set in a small seaside town in Ras Al Khaimah, it tells the tale of two teenagers on the road to adulthood, struggling to deal with the pressures of tradition while carving their own lives. Lead characters Mansoor and Kaltham live in a neighbourhood where ritual is key, and struggle to come to terms with young love and individuality. Emirati director Nawaf Al-Janahi,’s first feature, 2009’s The Circle, was described as a ‘major turning point in Emirati and Gulf cinema’, while the Abu Dhabi-based director describes his new work as a ‘coming of age story’. ‘Everyone goes through the experience of growing up,’ he says, ‘[which is] what makes this story really universal’.
