What: Adrenaline Sports Live When: October 8-10 Where: Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre Why we’re interested: Dragon-boating, surf safaris, a real ski slope, zooting and a bunch of other thrilling ways to hurt yourself in style. This is an event for extreme sports enthusiasts only!
What: Sneaky Sound System When: October 9 Where: Alpha Why we’re interested: The See You Next Friday nights at Alpha are normally good fun and the preview of the next few months seems unlikely to rock that tradition. Aussie electropop gang Sneaky Soundsystem are a platinum-selling trio who’ve triumphed at the Aria Awards (Australia’s equivalent of The Grammies) and, this year, completed their first US and UK tours.
What: Middle East International Film Festival When: October 8-17 Where: Various venues in Abu Dhabi Why we’re interested: This is the third year of MEIFF and Hollywood stars including Hilary Swank, Freida Pinto and Angelina Jolie are rumoured to be planning a visit.
What: The Rat Pack Party When: October 10 Where: Madinat Jumeirah Why we’re interested: A touch of class among a nightlife schedule crowded with DJs and rappers. The original Rat Pack were beacons of cool and have remained so for generations. Slip into a suit and enjoy the musical stylings of Frank and the boys.
What: Purple Music Launch party When: October 15 Where:Barasti Why we’re interested: Dance music diva Jocelyn Brown will be providing beachside vocals and Panevino will be mixing the tunes.
What: Rhythm Factory When: October 16 Where: Nasimi Beach Why we’re interested: Gilles Peterson is almost impossibly cool. He’s French, likes jazz and is a trendsetter and talent spotter. So there is sure to be some interest when he pulls his bulging record bag across the beach in Dubai. Metaphorically speaking of course.
What: Barasti Beach House When: October 16 Where: Barasti, Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Why we’re interested: There ain’t no party like a Barasti beach party. Picture the scene now – chilled out tunes provided by Portishead’s Andy Smith, a gentle lapping of the Gulf waters against your toes and a gentle breeze. Chilled out perfection?
What: Oompah Band When: October 15-17 Where: The Irish Village Why we’re interested: Because there is an oompah band coming to the Irish Village. Expect a night of classic Bavarian-style music, costumes and promotions.
What: Diwali When: October 17 Where: Across town Why we’re interested: The festival of lights is a public holiday in India and widely celebrated around the world. The hindu celebration is always one of the most colourful and attractive in the global events calendar and you can expect to see candles, lights and decorations spring up at venues around the city. What: Gitex Technology Week When: October 18-22 Where: Dubai Convention Centre Why we’re interested: This is the week geeks, nerds and IT professionals take over Dubai. Whether you’re interested.
What: Angela Hartnett cooking class When: October 19 Where: Verre Why we’re interested: Well she’s Gordon Ramsey’s protégé for starters, if you’ll pardon the pun. Plus, if the experts can’t teach us to cook, who can?
What: Studio 55 When: October 22 Where: Alpha Why we’re interested: The coolest spot in town brings us “a night dedicated to electrik disco, the chunkiest Nu-disco, classic house and the bassiest deep house.” We’re not quite sure what it means but it sounds like a jolly fun evening.
What: Magrudy’s Warehouse book sale When: October 23-24 Where: Magrudy’s, Jumeirah Beach Road Why we’re interested: We love a book, but we love a bargain book even more. Stock up on your favourite reads for half the price. What’s not to love?
What: Tenderhook When: October 22-24 Where: Madinat Theatre Why we’re interested: The ballet only comes to Dubai every once in a while and there is usually a rush to grab tickets while they’re available. This epic tale is a search for love and is emotionally charged with music from award-winning composer Ezio Bosso.
What: Dubai Fashion Week When: October 24-29 Where: Intercontinental Hotel Why we’re interested: Forget London and Paris, we’ve got style on our doorsteps these days. Local designers rub shoulder pads – very this season - with international stars. Be there.

What: Singing Kettle When: October 17-18 Where: Centrepoint Theatre Why we’re interested: They don’t just hand out Bafta awards and MBEs to just anybody you know. So our expectations are high for this comedy troupe from Scotland. Having said that it is obviously families only so don’t turn up expecting gritty drama or choreographed hip-hop routines.
