A Bollywood superstar, pop sisters, a famous footballer and a certain pop heiress all dropped by Dubai this year
Who: Paris Hilton When: June Why we loved it: Never has one woman stamped her brand so firmly on Dubai as Paris did this summer. We sweated our way across town, following the society princess from store openings – and there were many – to location shoots for her TV show. She was, in her own words, ‘hot’.
Who: Kylie & Dannii Minogue When: September Why we love it: For possibly the first and last time, Kylie Minogue played second fiddle to younger sister Dannii as the less-blessed Minogue filmed her X-Factor TV slot on our sunny shores. The superstar siblings posed like old pals as we chalked up yet more celebrity visitors to our emirate.
Who: Monica Bellucci When: July Why we loved it: The Cartier Polo is always a pretty glamorous ticket, but the presence of Italy’s most curvaceous export took this sporting stalwart stratospheric. The beautiful Bellucci posed like a pro, stunning seasoned snappers into silence, while the rest of us quietly wept at our inadequacies.
Who: Nelly When: March Why we loved it: Ok, so he was really in town to push his Applebottom fashion brand, but we don’t care – Nelly was awesome at Chi. After all, there’s nothing better than a raucous rendition of ‘Hot in Herre’ in the middle of the desert.
Who: David & Victoria Beckham When: January Why we loved it: Well, firstly, Becks came to visit with some of his AC Milan mates, which was nice. Secondly, he brought Posh with him, and she’s always value for money. She pouted at The Observatory and flounced around The Montgomerie. She was fabulous and we loved it.
Who: Fatboy Slim When: February Why we loved it: Any British expat worth their visa stamp has heard of the UK’s Brighton Beach but we were intrigued to discover that DJ Fatboy Slim planned to recreate the party at Barasti
. Luckily, it worked, and you loved it.
Who: Keane When: July Why we loved it; The news that these UK Indie lovelies were headed for The Madinat was music to our ears, if you’ll pardon the pun. We swayed our way through an evening of worthy ballads and Dubai became a better place.
Who: Aerosmith When: November Why we loved it: Wrinkly rocker, and Aerosmith frontman, Steve Tyler wasn’t even meant to be in our neck of the woods, his band were only booked to play the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, so we were extra-excited to spot him bopping along at Club 400
. If he’s really 79, we salute him.
Who: Gerard Butler When: December Why we loved it: The news that Scottish heartthrob Gerard Butler was to appear on the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) red carpet set Time Out towers alight – anyone got a spare press pass? Luckily we took our place to swoon with the rest of Dubai. Much obliged, DIFF.
Who: Anil Kapoor When: March Why we loved it: He’s no Monica Bellucci, but Anil Kapoor kept the Bollywood side up as he strutted his way through a day at the polo, courtesy of Cartier. With a jumper casually slung across his super-smug shoulders, he cosied up to Ms Bellucci, leaving the men of Dubai to wonder, why not me?
