Dubai Shopping Festival is 15 year’s old this year. Time to celebrate

In fact they were the 2nd best-selling foreign act in America last decade and a massive Middle East following is sure to be out in force to support their first visit to Dubai. The Walk at JBR: A fun fair, live jazz music and more promotions than you could shake a credit card at will make one of our favourite shopping hang outs even better throughout DSF. Oh, there will be an inflatable zone as well – perfect fun any time of year.
Status Quo concert: The English rock band that has recorded more than 60 chart hits in the UK, more than any other rock group in history. What’s more they’ve shown a generation of men how to party harder than others would have thought advisable. Get down to Festival City on February 6th to join in the fun.
Global Village: The shopping and cultural destination is back for the 2009-2010 season with the participation of 31 pavilions, 45 cultures, and around 6000 cultural shows and performances. Attractions including the Chinese Flying Poles Show, a stunt performance called Bounce! and cultural shows from Africa, Bulgaria, Brazil, France, US, Philippines, and Palestine look like being the highlights.
The Biggest Biryani Bowl: What do you get if you add approximately 1,200kg of Daawat rice, 48kg of Shan biryani masala, 155 litres of oil, 320 litres of yoghurt, and hundreds of kilos of mutton? 2.5 tonnes of biriyani of course! Gulf Bike Festival: We often here about ‘lifestyle events’ that really aren’t lifestyle events. Not so the Gulf Bike Festival. To the hundreds of motorbike riding enthusiasts around the region ‘riding’ really is a lifestyle. Expect the roar of engines, generous supplies of leather and a crowd full of bandanas to take over Festival City between February 4 and February 6.
Tamer Hosny concert: A heartthrob for millions of Arabs, Tamer Hosny comes to Dubai to perform his hit singles. The successful performer and composer also has a wide-following outside the Arab world. Media City will be hosting the concert on January 29.
Blood Brothers Musical: Blood Brothers, the third longest running show on London’s West End, is the critically acclaimed multiple award-winning musical about twin boys separated at birth but reunited by fate – with tragic consequences. The First Group Theatre at the Souk Madinat will be staging the show from January 28 to February 6.
The Little Big Club Show: Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and, most importantly, kids will be familiar with the names of Barney, Postman Pat, Fireman Sam, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina and Pingu already. What they might not know is that the entire gang and many more children’s favourites will be presenting the Little Big Club Show at the Airport Expo. The all-singing, all dancing show comes to town from February 5 to February 12.
Sunidhi Chauhan Concert: Sunidhi Chauhan is best known for her Bollywood songs. She is credited with more than 2,000 numbers. Chauhan began to sing at the age of four, and was discovered by a local TV anchor. She won recognition through a televised singing contest, Meri Awaz Suno, which she won, and made her entrance into playback singing with the Hindi film Shastra. She will take to the stage at the Madinat Arena on February 18.
Skywards Dubai International Jazz Festival: The Brand New Heavies, David Gray, James Morrison and dozens more musicians and jazz specialists will be funking up the city for ten days and nights. Annually one of the most enjoyable music events in the city it is a chilled out affair whether you’re dropping in for the occasional show or going along every night. Put the dates in your calendar now – February 10 to February 19 at Media City.
Ben 10: After wooing millions of children on television, Ben 10 comes to Dubai this DSF with an entirely new production and a premiere titled The Power of the Omnitrix. The show is a combination of Ben 10 Classic and Ben 10 Alien Force. Take the kids in your life along to watch Ben, Grandpa Max and Gwen as fourteen characters bring the Power of the Omnitrix to life. The fun comes to Dubai Airport Expo from February 19-26.
Opening Ceremony: After 14 editions, DSF 2010 is coming up with an innovative opening ceremony to spread the festive feel of DSF across Dubai. Focused on providing the ultimate in shopping, malls in Dubai will host jaw-dropping discounts for just one day – the opening day of DSF 2010. To add to the festive atmosphere, a dazzling fireworks display will be held at the Seef area of Dubai Creek to herald 32 days of celebration.
Retail Promotions and Raffles: With around 6000 retail outlets and 40 shopping malls participating, the DSF 2009 promotions are slated to be the best shopping offers designed in a DSF edition yet. Offers, added value promotions, sales and discounts reaching up to 80 per cent on international brands covering a wide range of consumer goods await shoppers in Dubai.
Khor Dubai Area: The Shindagah area, the Heritage and Diving Village, the Bastakiya, Souk al Kabeer, the Gold Souk, and the Spice Market will provide visitors an insight into the old Dubai. The highlight, though, will be the Al Seef area that will host numerous art displays and will take up the art theme throughout DSF.
