Why you should visit this fantastic cultural destination
The India Pavilion BDI Exports
These gorgeous slippers won’t last long on concrete floors, but come in so many colours and varieties and are such good value that you can afford to buy a few pairs. Sizes range from 37 to 43 and cost Dhs45-Dhs150.
Royal Way Cosmetics Shop
An ayurvedic beauty stall that sells all-natural products. We love the aloe-vera multi-purpose moisturiser Dhs45.
Rajasthani puppet master Ashok is well worth a visit. His puppets cost around Dhs50, but his ‘Disco Dancer’ song and puppet dance is truly priceless.
The Thai Pavilion Wang Kew Jewellery
This silver- and gold-plated costume jewellery comes from a 44-year-old factory and uses semi-precious stones and cubic zirconia. You can pick up a complete set (necklace, earrings and ring) from Dhs2,980.
While you’re in ‘Thailand’, make sure to get a 30-minute foot massage for Dhs60 at this small spa. You can also pick up some exotic fruit from one of the many stalls nearby.
The Syria Pavilion Khasim Pour Les Orient
Watch these woollen carpets being made right in front of your eyes. This one costs Dhs400 – not bad when you consider it took them four days straight to make it.
The Palestine Pavilion Um Hamza Food Stuff
The labneh (Dhs20 per pot) is to die for. We also love the eggplant, chilli and zaatar varieties – in fact, we managed to eat a whole tub in one night. Also try the olive oil, which costs Dhs40 a litre. All produce is from Palestine.
The UAE Pavilion Safa Spices and Honey
Head here for great star anise and cinnamon sticks, as well as honey from Yemen. The most expensive variety costs Dhs1,000 per kg.
Aya Novelties Trading
For all kinds of UAE paraphernalia. These ceramic tiles of the sheikhs cost from Dhs120.
The Africa Pavilion Kenya Shop
You’re guaranteed a friendly greeting at this pavilion. Head to this shop to check out the masks, which will set you back Dhs80 each.
The Turkey Pavilion Istanbul Art Gallery
This store sells beautiful ceramics and stunning glass lamps. The lamps cost from Dhs150 for a single piece to Dhs17,000 for this mammoth number, which is three metres high and contains 55 lamps.
