Sweet Lane The sunny days cake Overall appearance: Very pretty and intricate icing but lacking ‘wow’ factor appearance for kids. Sponge texture & flavour: The wow is in the light and moist chocolate sponge with a rich chocolatey flavour and melt-in-the-mouth texture. Can definitely taste the quality of the ingredients. Fillings: Gorgeous chocolate cream. Not sickly, but dark and decadent. Icing: Just enough for sweetness. Verdict: Beautiful flavour – shame to waste it on a bunch of kids!
Custom-made cake specialists, Sweet Lane handdraw all designs. Prices from Dhs425, with a min 2kg cake order. Order 3-5 days in advance. Visit www.sweetlanecakes.blogspot.com for inspiration. (04 395 5337)
Park ‘n Shop The football pitch cake Overall appearance: Boys will go wild for this bright green footie pitch, with nets and players. Easy to cut and share, this whopper will easily cater to a hungry soccer team (and the opposition). Sponge texture & flavour: Light and airy chocolate sponge, but a tad artificial and lacking the flavour of other cakes. Fillings: A little bit of chocolate cream… we think. Icing: Kids love icing, and there’s lots of it (thick and gooey), so brace yourselves for a bouncy ride home. Verdict: One for the kids, who’ll love the design and the slab of icing sugar.
A popular choice with mums, Park ‘n Shop boasts an extensive birthday cake catalogue (they create 50-80 kids’ cakes a week) and can create almost any shape, theme or style, including 3D designs. From Dhs100 (small) to Dhs300 (large). Need minimum three days notice. Park ‘n Shop, Umm Suqeim (04 394 5671)
Simpleedelicious The roller skate cake Overall appearance: Beautifully textured cake – very girlie and very pink. Sponge texture & flavour: Tasty, homemade vanilla sponge, there’s certainly nothing artificial about this cake. Fillings: None – and who needs it with all that creamy icing? Icing: Utterly butterly – lots of rich butter cream icing. Just make sure you give kids a small portion as it’s quite heavy. Verdict: This has the most ‘home-made’ feel, a little cloying if you eat too much, which is easy to do.
Specialising in 3D creations, professional baker Samm Schnoor creates custom-made cakes in a variety of flavours and designs. Prices start from Dhs300. Order at least one week in advance. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
The House of Cakes The Hello Kitty cake Overall appearance: The most professional of the lot, if it wasn’t for our purring pink pal perched on the top, this could be a wedding cake. Sponge texture & flavour: Light, but a bit chewy and not much flavour. Fillings: Synthetic cream – not our cup of tea. Icing: Chewy, thick and too much of it for our taste. Verdict: Looks great, but kids may struggle to cut into it and the sickly flavour means you’re likely to have plenty left over.
A leading designer of wedding and birthday cakes, order online at www.houseofcakesdubai.com from more than 300 themed cakes. Starting from Dhs200, all are handmade and intricately decorated. International City (04 420 6973) or email: email@example.com
The Lime Tree Café The pizza cake Overall appearance: Quirky and cute, this one made us gasp with its novelty value. Sponge texture & flavour: Dense but delicious wholemeal white chocolate sponge. Fillings: None, the pizza cake is topped with strawberry jam ‘tomato sauce’ instead. Icing: None, but we love the clever use of ingredients – tons of jelly sweets doubling as pizza toppings and white chocolate as ‘mozzarella’. Verdict: A fabulous-looking and tasting cake, it makes a delicious alternative. This one definitely has the biggest wow factor.
Known for its healthy, homemade food, Lime Tree Café offers several themed cakes, including the Pizza Cake (Dhs150) and White Chocolate Fudge Cake with Jelly Beans (Dhs230). They can personalise them and do some customisation. The Lime Tree Café, Jumeirah Beach Road (04 325 6325)
Sugar Daddy’s Bakery The spiderman cake Overall appearance: Beautiful tall sponge cake, but it did get us wondering how we’d cut it and share it with 20 hungry kids. Sponge texture & flavour: Gorgeous cupcake-esque chocolate sponge – a chocolate-lover’s dream Fillings: A small spread of luxurious choccie cream – just enough for a taste. Icing: Piled-high frosting, as you’d expect from a cupcake baker. Lovely and creamy. Verdict: Scrummy cake and beautifully presented.
With a focus on cupcakes, Sugar Daddy’s Bakery also creates contemporary custom-made birthday party cakes. Choose from an amazing 24 cake and icing flavours. From Dhs125 to Dhs1,500. Sugar Daddy’s, The Village Mall (04 344 8204)

I completely agree with you Suzie. And not just the bakeries that you've spoken about, but also Cold Stone Creamery does beautiful ice-cream cakes starting from just AED.99.

I have tried calling Sweet lane but seems they are no longer in Dubai. The best fancy designs cakes are from The House of Cakes Dubai - and it is so easy to choose and order a cake online.

You get the most awesome and moist cakes from standard places like Lulu Hypermarket. Clearly, this is not a comprehensive articles, is it? It's just a lazy rendering of the most well marketed places in Jumeirah.
Try Cocos on Sheikh Zayed Road. Yum cakes. No fancy designs. Try Caesars and Mister Baker's. They all have reasonably priced cakes and Mister Baker can do many fancy designs as well.
Don't only market the most priced cakes in town. You do your readership a lot of harm.

Try Sweet Stuff on Beach Road next to The One store - amazing!
Order the cake from there for my daughter's 1st birthday.
Also Sweet Surpirse opposite Lulu behind Mall of the Emirates. Where you get everything under one roof - gifts, party items, cakes, etc.
