Momotaro Save 25% on all food and drinks Souk al Bahar has a growing number of restaurants but Momotaro shouldn’t be overlooked. Get seats on the balcony, as although you face away from the Dubai Fountain, you’ll still get a decent view of Old Town. Momotaro’s menu is pretty extensive, with a page on maki alone and there’s a mix of traditional staples with more interesting dishes throughout. The mango, asparagus and crab maki tends to be chunkily homemade, full of flavour and generous – with eight large pieces being delivered. The city’s favourite miso black cod can also be found here, but for those that aren’t so keen on fish, cooked or otherwise, they do have a decent selection of wagyu beef steaks. It’s best to head down to Momotaro in the evenings when there’s more of a buzz in the mall, as it can be a little quiet during lunchtimes. Open daily noon-midnight. Level 3, Souk Al Bahar, Downtown Burj Dubai (04 425 7976).
Sakura Save 25% on food and 20% on all drinks A perfectly well laid out, pleasant Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar and teppanyaki stations hidden within the Taj Palace hotel in Deira. The menu covers all Japanese bases and isn’t so large it’s overwhelming. Try the tuna sashimi which is as soft as butter and pleasantly filling. A selection of dim sum are steaming hot and fall apart the moment you prod them with a chopstick – just how we like them. Open daily from 7pm-11.30pm Taj Palace Hotel, Deira (04 223 2222).
Sho Cho Save 15% on all food and drinks This trendy little beachside spot at Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa has long lured the beautiful people for drinks, socialising and, if they’re not too conscious of their waistlines, a bite to eat. Food comes in the form of sushi and sashimi (requisite food for flashy venues, it seems), and while it’s fresh and decent enough, service can be slightly on the slow side in the packed venue. However, you’re paying for the atmosphere here, and you could do far worse than sitting back and relaxing, sipping a drink and enjoy the views while the waiter muscles his way through the people to reach your table. Open daily 7pm-3am. Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa, Jumeirah (04 346 1111).
