Aquara Lounge The deal: Buy one selected drink and get one free daily 6pm-7.30pm The place: For a very happy hour-and-a-half, you can buy one drink, get one free at this Dubai Marina Yacht Club bar. Although be warned: while women, it seems, are free to wear whatever they please, boys should leave the flip flops at home, as they’ll find themselves turned away for attempting to place an exposed toe over the threshold. A range of bar snacks is available, including dim sum, potato wedges, olives and feta, for a relatively reasonable Dhs30 a pop – though we do wish they’d shake up the menu once in a while. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Dubai Marina Yacht Club (04 362 7900).
Bidi Bondi The deal: Enjoy 30 per cent off house beverages for three hours, while ladies get selected mixed drinks for Dhs20 all night. The place: A laid-back atmosphere, relaxed dress code and good selection across the taps make this a popular weekend spot with both Palm-dwellers and Marina residents. The extremely tasty pub fare on offer includes Aussie faves at very reasonable prices. The dress code: Casual The details: Thu 5pm-8pm. Al Manal Clubhouse, Palm Jumeirah (04 427 0515).
Blue Bar The deal: Buy one get one free offer on house beverages. The place: Dubai’s one authentic jazz and (obviously) blues bar, showcases some genuine local talent. But if that’s not reason enough to visit, try buy one, get one free offers daily. Located on the ground floor of the businesslike Novotel, Blue Bar combines fashionable decor, cigars and an unusually good selection of draught Belgian beers. Just make sure that when you go live music is scheduled. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 6pm-8pm. Novotel World Trade Centre Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 332 0000).
Calabar The deal: Enjoy a 50 per cent discount on all beverages. The place: A laid-back, sophisticated spot where the one main drawback is the five-star hotel-priced drinks (Dhs50 for a glass of white South American grape). Solution? A 50 per cent discount on all beverages from 6pm to 8pm. Relax on the terrace as the sun goes down and enjoy spectacular views of the mighty Burj Khalifa. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 6pm-8pm. The Address, Downtown Dubai (04 436 8880).
Carter’s The deal: Discounts on selected drinks. The place: In keeping with its place in the Wafi Pyramids building, Carter’s has a vaguely Egyptian theme, inasmuch as there are fake mummies in glass cabinets as you enter, and there’s a bit of spiel about an explorer on the menu. The rest of the decor feels more colonial Asian, with the wafting ceiling fans, and dark wood and marble bar. The central area of Carter’s is normally a convivial, if occasionally posy, spot, with a crowd entertained by a house band most evenings. To the sides, there are low, comfy armchairs that create a relaxing atmosphere for diners. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 4pm-8pm. Wafi, Oud Metha (04 324 0000).
Double Decker The deal: Selected beverages are 20 per cent off every day until 8pm. Watch sports live with five bottles and portion of Buffalo wings for Dhs99 on Saturdays. Selected drinks get doubled up on Wednesdays; plus mixed drinks are Dhs25. The place: Once a favoured stomping ground for homesick British expats, particular during post-Friday brunch, this London Transport-themed pub has seen its popularity decline over recent months. Perhaps the new garden will help to give business a boost. The dress code: Casual The details: Sat- Thu 12noon- 8pm. Al Murooj Rotana, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 321 1111).
Ember Grill & Lounge The deal: Buy one get one free on selected beverages. The place: At Ember, it’s impossible to forget that you’re in a very big, square room – albeit one that’s pretty hip. White paint coats the exposed brick walls and uniform gilt-edged mirrors run the entire periphery of the warehouse-like bar and restaurant. Ember’s still settling in but the rough edges need smoothing out a little. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 6.30pm-9pm. The Address, Dubai Mall, Downtown Burj Khalifa (04 438 8999).
Evory Lounge The deal: Discounts on all selected drinks. The place: Double up on drinks for just Dhs10 in this excellent and cosy two-toned bar at the Mall of the Emirates. Curl up in a corner and add tempting tapas to trendy cocktails for an evening of relaxing in style. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 5pm-7pm. Kempinski Hotel, Mall of the Emirates, Barsha (04 341 0000).
Fibber Magee's The deal: Get 25- 30 per cent off selected drinks.
The place: There’s plenty to love about this slightly grubby pub behind the Crowne Plaza on Sheikh Zayed Road. There’s a great quiz, a top ladies’ night and some show-stealing pub grub to get your laughing gear around. What’s more, it excels where many of the city’s newest bars fall flat: it has character. The dress code: Casual The details: Sat- Thu 4pm-7pm. Behind the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 332 2400).
Harry Ghatto’s The deal: Happy hour throughout the week. The place: Dubaians can be split into two camps: those who love karaoke and those who hate it, but secretly wish they were up on stage crooning 'Suspicious Minds'. If you have accepted your inner diva, Harry Ghatto's is the best place in Dubai to belt out a few classics. Nestled in the back room of a sushi restaurant, the can't-swing-a-cat cosiness and twin microphone set-up inspires a brothers-in-song ambience. Dutch courage comes courtesy of extremely expensive imported Japanese beers and sake but don't worry if you're still a little nervous: the staff are always on hand to show you how it's done. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 8pm-10pm. Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 319 8088).
Harvester's The deal: Selected drinks are up to half price. The place: This quintessentially dark-wooded English pub has a lot more character than most of its competitors. There’s a sun-dappled outdoor terrace if the dark interior makes you gloomy. For comfort food and a quiet pint, you can’t go far wrong. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 5pm-8pm. Crowne Plaza Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 331 1111).
Horizon Lounge The deal: Enjoy 30 per cent off drinks until 8pm, and mojito drinks are Dhs15 for ladies all night. There are complimentary snacks at 9pm, plus barbecue, sushi and shisha. The place: : With undoubtedly one of the most enviable settings in the neighbourhood, Horizon already has an edge over its beachfront competitors. If you’re in search of a bar with a sea view and a lower riff-raff density than, say, Wavebreakers, but not quite as sophisticated as the One&Only Royal Mirage’s Jetty Lounge, this may well be the spot for you. Thursdays and Fridays draw a young, attractive crowd, many of them moneyed (judging by the large bottles of beverages on most of the tables) and plenty of them wildly overdressed. Another happy hour to escape a desired bar’s five-star prices. The dress code: Casual The details: Fri 5pm-8pm. Habtoor Grand Resort & Spa, Dubai Marina (04 399 5000).
Icon Bar & Lounge The deal: Selected beverages Dhs19-Dhs25. The place: Though regularly busy with media types having a liquid lunch or an after-work beverage, Icon is notoriously packed on Thursdays, when a large crowd descend to take advantage of happy hour. Tends to get a bit smoky on busier nights. The dress code: Casual The details: Sat-Thu 6pm-8pm. Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City (04 366 9111).
Krossroads The deal: 20 per cent off on all beverages. The place: Good for obscure fun, this relatively hidden spot boasts unusual aesthetics and menu offerings. Aspects of the décor are undeniably 1970s discotheque, with dated touches like back-lit treble clefts on the wall alternating between every colour of the rainbow. Others are harder to place, but no less enjoyable. As far as drinks go, the house grape is surprisingly good, without a hint of the overpowering acidity found in many beverages served by some of Dubai’s lower-priced hotels. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily noon-4pm, 6pm-8pm. Imperial Suites Hotel, Bur Dubai (055 923 2141).
Lake View The deal: Enjoy a 15 per cent discount on selected beverages. The place: With a fine view of the creek’s comings and goings, and the rhythmic thwacks of golf balls being lofted through the air from the course below, it’s hard to think of another bar in Dubai that’s quite as relaxing as this. Which is good news, because the staff are usually so busy that you’ll have to wait a little while for service. The dress code: Casual The details: Sun-Thu 5pm-7pm. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, Deira (04 295 6000).
Left Bank (Souk Al Bahar) The deal: Selected drinks have discounts of up to 25 per cent, plus customers can buy a bottle of grape-based beverage for the price of three glasses. The place: Left Bank’s Souk al Bahar branch remains one of our favourite bars in the city: despite its sleek décor and upmarket feel, it retains an unpretentious atmosphere. The clientele tends to comprise after-work professionals and couples. Service can be a little on the slow side if you’re seated there but the staff’s cheery smiles and friendly demeanour should put paid to any criticisms, and you can always sup on one of the inventive cocktails while you wait. The dress code: Casual The details: Sat-Thu 6pm-8pm. Downtown Burj Khalifa (04 368 4501).
Malecon The deal: Five drinks for Dhs100. The place: In no way affiliated to its famed overseas namesakes, Malecon is a funky-enough salsa spot with an in-house Latino troupe and blue walls that have been graffitied to the max. A restaurant in the early evening, the smaller hours sees the dance floor get some action as a regular collective of merengue maniacs cut some rug. Malecon sometimes hosts house DJs. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 6pm-8pm, Fri and Sun until 3am. Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa, Jumeirah (04 346 1111).
Maxx Music Bar and Grill The deal: 20 per cent off selected home beverages. The place: This welcoming spot behind Mall of the Emirates is perfect for sharing tasty deep-fried bar snacks over a few decently-priced drinks with friends. You’d better be feeling chatty, because the resident band often strike up conversations with customers. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 6pm-9pm. Citymax Al Barsha, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 409 8000).
The Music Room The deal: Double Regular spirits, Regular Bottled Beers and House Wine for Dhs 20.
The place: A cavernous music venue and bar, The Music Room is a great spot for group get-togethers and draws a sociable crowd, making it an excellent place to garner new acquaintances. Drinks are reasonable and the quesadillas are delicious. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 6pm-9pm. Majestic Hotel Tower, Bur Dubai (04 501 2534).
MyBar The deal: 20 per cent off on selected drinks. The place: Get a good ol’-fashioned two for one deal at a casual place to meet and have a few drinks with a colonial ambience and hospitality. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 7pm-10pm. Dusit Thani Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 343 3333).
Nelson's Bar The deal: Selected drinks have varying discounts from Saturday to Thursday. 40 per cent off on selected drinks for Face card holders everyday. The place: With hundreds of victories under his belt, endless prestige and a position as ninth greatest Briton in history (well, according to public vote anyway), Horatio Nelson probably doesn’t need a bar in the Media Rotana to increase his standing. Still, he probably wouldn’t be too displeased with this place, which makes an admirable attempt at recreating a British-style pub in the dusty wilderness of Al Barsha. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 12noon-8pm. Media Rotana, TECOM (04 435 0000).
Oscar's Vine Society The deal: Buy one glass of grape, get one free. The place: At happy hour time, a trip to Oscar’s Vine Society offers a warm and welcome respite in a city where restaurant service can seem somewhat cool. Perhaps it’s the stylish, wine cellar decor (tables are decked out like barrels), which has had something of a renovation of late. Though we think the warm service and quality food don’t hurt, either. At Oscar’s, the staff always greet you with a relaxed and sincere smile – no overselling to be found at this lovely venue. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 6pm-7pm. Crowne Plaza Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 331 1111).
Player's Lounge The deal: 25 per cent off on the total bill of food and beverages. The place: Enjoy lively football banter with complete strangers any given day of the week at this Al Raffa watering hole. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily noon-8pm. Country Club Hotel, Bur Dubai (04 398 8840).
RED Lounge Terrace The deal: Enjoy sundowners on the terrace where selected beverages are half price. The place: The fact this bar’s name is partially in capitals should serve as a reasonably clear indication of what to expect when you walk in. But the extent of the colour theme, no matter how tasteful, may still take you by surprise. Filled with arty touches, from kitsch panda motifs and trinkets to more delicate Asian-inspired finishings, this is clearly the result of some serious investment. The dress code: Smart elegant The details: Daily 6pm-8pm. Raffles Dubai, Oud Metha (04 314 9770).
Rosso The deal: Selected drinks between Dhs20-Dhs25. The place: It may be located inside an Italian restaurant at JBR, but this bar certainly doesn’t fall into the ‘afterthought’ category. It could even be described as the centrepiece. A grand, rectangular affair of red and black (matching the colour scheme of the rest of the room), it has all the makings of a good Friday-night spot – we think this could soon be the new ‘go-to’ watering hole for JBR residents and local Marina-dwellers. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 6pm-9pm. Amwaj Rotana, Dubai Marina (04 428 3088).
Senyar The deal: Selected drinks Dhs19, excluding juices. The place: Get past the ‘hotel lobby’ feel and this clean, white, two-tiered space is stylish (red accent furniture, exotic vodka bottles sunk into an illuminated white wall, the requisite outside terrace) and, on the night we visited, was buzzing with an excitable after-work crowd. The list of cocktails is extensive and imaginative; there’s `a fair range of (expensive) wines and, in between the usual draught beer suspects, a few surprises like the winningly tasty Weiss beer. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 5pm-8pm. Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Jumeirah (04 511 7309).
Seville's The deal: Enjoy ‘almost’ 40 per cent off selected drinks. Daily 4pm-8pm. The place: This picturesque Spanish haunt boasts a live guitarist and a sizeable outdoor terrace, making it ideal for an al-fresco drink. The tapas menu isn’t bad either, offering finger-sized portions that are good for sharing with friends. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 4pm-8pm. Wafi, Oud Metha (04 324 4777).
Sublime Bar & Lounge The deal: Buy one get one free offer on selected house beverages & cocktails. The place: Warm wood, retro details and a plethora of textiles fill this new bar, but looks can deceive – the first sensation when entering is the ice-cold blast of air conditioning shimmering down your shirt. That said, the pours at this World Trade Centre bar are generous, the flatscreens always show a range of sports (favouring Arabic soccer leagues on our visit) and the food menu varied. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 7pm-9pm. Ibis World Trade Centre Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road, www.sublimebar.com (04 318 7130).
The Boardwalk The deal: Enjoy 20 per cent off selected beverages. The place: Positioned on the edge of Dubai Creek on the Deira side, this casual spot is perfect for a liquid lunch with friends at the weekend. It’s a great place to enjoy the sun and views of the passing dhows, and if you’re feeling peckish the club sandwich is a winner. The dress code: Casual The details: Sun-Thu 4pm-7pm. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, Deira (04 295 6000).
The Crown & Lion The deal: 20 per cent off on all regular drinks daily 6pm-8pm. The place: True to its name, The Crown & Lion is a quintessentially British pub with a pool table, dart boards, tasty pub grub and a flatscreen TV showing sport at every turn. On top of happy hour offers, The Crown & Lion has plenty of food promotions throughout the week (it’s rib night on Wednesday, hooray!) and a quiz night. Considering that we’ll soon be skulking into the shadows come summer, we can’t think of many better places to escape the heat than here. The dress code: Casual The details: The Crown & Lion, Byblos Hotel, TECOM, (04 448 8000).
The Glasshouse The deal: Buy two meals, get all of your selected drinks for Dhs1. The place: More of a restaurant than a bar (it's located across the corridor from Gordon Ramsay's Verre, so is in good culinary company). However, on Mondays and Wednesdays, into force comes the infamous Dhs1 drinks deal: buy two courses in the restaurant and get all your drinks for Dhs1. Was frequently populated by expats a couple of years ago, but has slipped under the radar since. Food is fairly standard European stuff, with a smart-ish twist – nothing particularly memorable, but nothing to complain about either. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Mon, Wed 7pm-midnight. Hilton Dubai Creek, Deira (04 227 1111).
The Grandstand Bar The deal: Two for one on house beverages. The place: happy hour at an Australian-themed bar? Wow, Aussies are a pretty happy bunch anyway. Throw in daily drinks deals, a menu of famous draughts and bar snacks designed around the Park Regis’s Australian roots and live sport on the TVs to boot and you are talking about a very happy hour at a very happy bar. G’Day! The dress code: Smart The details: Daily 6pm-9pm. Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel, Bur Dubai (04 377 1111)
The Terrace The deal: Enjoy selected drinks for Dhs27. The place: The Terrace at Media Rotana Dubai (not to be mistaken for The Park Hyatt’s own splendid Terrace, or any of the other half-dozen bars with ‘terrace’ in their name) features a wide bar, comfy seats, copious shisha, friendly staff, sound food and good drink prices. Worth a visit if you’re nearby. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 5pm-8pm. Media Rotana, TECOM (04 435 0000).
The Underground Pub The deal: Enjoy 20 per cent off selected drinks. The place: Only in Dubai could Liverpool fans make a pub dedicated to the London Underground their home. A popular spot with football, The Underground is relatively quiet most days of the week, but draws big crowds on match days, doing a roaring trade in pints, chips and bangers and mash. The dress code: Casual The details: Sat- Thu 6pm-8pm; Fri 4pm- 8pm. Habtoor Grand Resort & Spa, Dubai Marina (04 399 5000).
Time Café The deal: Enjoy 20 per cent discount on selected drinks. The place: Another popular sports bar, this one of extremely generous proportions. Time Café has everything a person might need if they were to spend an entire weekend camped out at a bar: it’s packed with pool tables, beanbags, TVs, extremely decent food and great service. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily noon-9pm. Ramee Royal Hotel, Karama (04 334 4088).
Trader Vic’s (Crowne Plaza) The deal: Get half price selected drinks, daily 6pm-8pm.
The place: Hidden away in the old-school Crowne Plaza, this Polynesian-themed gem boasts an excellent selection of weird and wonderful mixed drinks, from the fruity to the fiery, and an exceptionally tasty assortment of bar snacks. Calamari served with wasabi mayonnaise is particularly moreish. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Crowne Plaza Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 331 1111).
Vintage The deal: Selected drinks are 40 per cent off. The place: Reminiscent of a South American bar with a mellow and sophisticated (yet surprisingly unpretentious) vibe, it’s the perfect place for a catch-up with friends: you can lounge on the sofas or sit up at high tables. Admittedly, it does seem a little out of place inside a pyramid (but then, what doesn’t?) and WAFI is not at the beating heart of Dubai’s night life. However, when a cheese selection is as good as it is here, so be prepared to fork out that extra Dhs10 on a taxi to get there. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 5pm-8pm. Wafi, Oud Metha (04 324 4100).
Vista Rooftop Bar & Restaurant The deal: 20 per cent discount on selected beverages. The place: Though it is positioned atop the Holiday Inn Dubai Internet City, most taxi drivers will strongly disagree with the hotel’s labelling, and rightly so; this bar is in fact located in Knowledge Village. Once you’ve overcome this geographic hurdle, an extremely pleasant surprise awaits. One of the city’s hidden gems, you’ll find no snooty crowds or vapid posers here: instead, guests are greeted warmly by staff, and can choose to sit either by the entrance to the bar’s bejewelled interior, or on the sun-splashed deck looking out to towards the Palm Jumeirah. The dress code: Casual The details: Daily 6pm-8pm. Holiday Inn Express Dubai Internet City, Knowledge Village (04 427 5500).
Warehouse The deal: Selected drinks have 20 per cent off. The place: Chic bar meets gaudy nightclub – in a good way. Warehouse’s fun decor and lively crowd create a vibrant atmosphere, with the help of a few classic dancefloor fillers to get the crowds moving. A must try. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 5pm- 8pm onwards. Le Méridien Dubai, Garhoud (04 217 0000).
Yesterday Restaurant & Bar The deal: Enjoy discounts on selected beverages. The place: Want to go somewhere where everybody knows your name? Don’t we all. But Yesterday is a bar that wouldn’t look out of place as the set of a particularly cheery 1980s US sitcom. Just as the name suggests, Yesterday is a bar that echoes the past. Popular for workers who want to enjoy a drink while the traffic dies down. The dress code: Smart casual The details: Daily 6pm-8pm. Four Points by Sheraton Downtown, Bur Dubai (04 316 9711).
