Celebrate American Independence Day with these dishes
Time Out Dubai Staff
It’s American Independence Day this week. To help you celebrate the Fourth of July, we’ve rounded up the most authentic Stateside grub in town
Burgers Shake Shack In the US, Shake Shack (above) markets itself as the modern-day answer to the traditional burger stand (specialising, of course, in milkshakes). This concept is loyally recreated in Dubai at Mall of the Emirates. The burgers themselves stay together nicely, allowing you to tuck into the two tender patties, pickles and sauces with minimum mess. Taste-wise, the burgers fare well – far better than the equivalents elsewhere in the mall’s food court, though in our books the meat feats are somewhat overpriced at Dhs35 for a double. Mall of the Emirates, Barsha (04 347 5513).
Tex-Mex Loca This Jumeirah venue earned the Best Bar Food award at the 2011 Time Out Dubai Restaurant Awards for its fine Tex Mex fare – great ribs, fresh guacamole and enchiladas to die for. The decor may not be quintessentially American, but the lively atmosphere, and the fact you can order kegs for your table, make it a great place to celebrate on July 4. Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa, Jumeirah (04 346 1111).
Steak Ruth’s Chris Steak House Proud of its 45-year-old American heritage, the chain has restaurants in more than 32 US states. But far from being stereotypically brash and boisterous, it takes the best bits of American hospitality (first-class service, a lively vibe), then adds sleek, modern décor and sinfully tasty food for a dining experience that ticks all the boxes. The Dubai outpost of the chain, nestled in The Monarch, doesn’t have the same heritage, but that hasn’t stopped it from drawing a loyal following – unlike many restaurants in this city, it attracts a buzzing crowd most nights. As for the steaks? You can always trust the Yanks to get it right: prime cuts of meltingly tender USA Midwestern beef are served on plates heated to 500°F and sloshed with diet-busting melted butter. Sides are sold separately and follow the American tradition of bigger-is-better: we’d advise sharing, provided you can agree on which of the seven different types of potato to try (the sweet potato casserole is divine). If all those carbs haven’t done you in, the sizeable desserts are the perfect way to round off your meal. Monarch Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 501 8666).
Ice Cream Cold Stone Creamery How can you possibly improve on something that’s basically cream and sugar, whipped and frozen into a delicious icy treat? Well, the Americans have found a way. First, you take ice cream and slap it down on a frozen granite slab. Then, you mix in anything you can think of. Peanut butter? Yes. Oreo cookies? Yes. Gummy Bears. Sadly, yes. These are all available for experimentation, with tempting displays of chocolate bars, nuts and sweets lining the counter. And, not content with the classic chocolate, vanilla and strawberry offerings, Cold Stone even sells a selection of sorbets. For those who can’t make up their minds, there are signature creations, with names such as All Lovin’ No Oven (mainly cookie dough) and Peanut Butter Cup Perfection. Still not exciting enough for you? Not to worry – staff will also sing and dance while they prepare your snack. Try not to be embarrassed – just embrace it. After all, it’s the American way.
