Green Lantern shining strong
Earth's emerald saviour is top of the pops

Green Lantern
There’s a twinge of let’s-do-better ambition here, but no sooner are we introduced to villain Parallax – who’s out to destroy the Lanterns – than the film takes a ruinous detour to Earth. Whenever it returns to terra firma, its imaginative flights are ground under the Warners overlords’ demographic-pandering heels. Keith Uhlich

Super 8
A train crash, complete with multiple explosions, blows out your eardrums. And the kids who accidentally film it – mainly Joe the grief-dazed son of a recently widowed Ohio police deputy, and Alice, the love interest of his gang’s cheesy zombie flick – are bound for a shrieky adventure. Super 8, for all its dewy-eyed nostalgia, is undeniably a product of today’s abbreviated attention spans. Joshua Rothkopf

Kung Fu Panda 2
Dreamworks’ latest flick packs a punch when it comes to delivering fast-paced action sequences, but it comes up short on plot. After proving himself to be a worthy warrior in the first film, Po was launched to hero status among his small-town peers, but it turns out the panda’s kung fu journey is far from complete. X-Men: First Class
Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto (Fassbender), is out for the blood of scoundrel Sebastian Shaw, the energy-sapping mutant Nazi who executed Erik’s mother. Meanwhile, in the cosy pubs of Oxford, fledgling genetics professor Charles Xavier (McAvoy) has been roped-in by the CIA to use his telepathic powers to locate Shaw. What follows is a jolly collection of snappy montages and FX setpieces. McAvoy plays Xavier as a raffish boffin and his charming performance is one of the film’s high points. David Jenkins

The Hangover Part II
Expect the completely expected when the wolfpack find themselves on another stag night, only this time the brown stuff hits the fan when they lose one of their number in Bangkok. Though at times a little more risqué than the first Hangover, the plot is almost identical, and a joke is never as funny the second time around. Holly Sands

365 Youm Saada (Arabic)
365 Youm Sa’ada is the story of playboy millionaire Hady (Ezz) who has looks, money and charm ... and a penchant for multiple marriages. When he wants out, he simply fakes a life-threatening illness. Easy. But when he really falls for a girl (Ghanem) his world is shattered when he finds out she has cancer and has been given a year to live. As with many romantic Egyptian films, 365 Youm Sa’ada focuses on the two stars for 90 per cent of the picture. Their charms wear thin and the comedy talents of a supporting cast including Lotfy Labib, Mai Kassab, Salah Abdallah and Youssef Daoud are wasted. A lack of chemistry between the stars is contrasted by impressive camera work; with beautiful sceneries from start to finish. A film to appeal only to die-hard Ezz or Ghanem fans.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Johnny Depp is back in the headscarf and eyeliner as Captain Jack Sparrow, whose search for the Fountain of Youth has foundered for no specific reason. Finding himself in London for no specific reason, he soon falls in with ex Angelica (Penélope Cruz), who is masquerading as Sparrow for no specific reason. Together they set off for the fountain, pursued by Geoffrey Rush’s peg-legged Barbossa, who has joined the British navy for no specific reason. On Stranger Tides is simply lifeless. Tom Huddleston

Rabbit Hole
This adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s play offers the sort of tragedy that all but guarantees mountains of tissues on multiplex floors. Rabbit Hole initially keeps its cards close to its chest: why is Nicole Kidman’s suburbanite so disturbed over those symbolically trampled flowers? And what’s up with the old home videos her husband (Eckhart) watches? Slowly, it’s revealed that they’ve suffered a loss that no amount of sympathy, squash games and support groups can cure. London Boulevard
The directing debut of William Monahan adapts Ken Bruen’s novel about an ex-con in London, who becomes the bodyguard of a nervy actress while trying to keep himself on the straight and narrow. Despite a big-name cast and talented crew, it’s a lifeless film. Dave Calhoun
