Which US actress had the biggest bank boost in past 12 months?
Forbes Magazine has released its annual list of the highest earning actresses in Hollywood. Who punched, kicked and pouted there way to number one spot with a family-friendly $30m?
10 Meryl Streep, $10m
Considering the fact that Streep has had 16 Oscar nominations, it is clear that she chooses jobs based on the quality of the role, rather than the wheelbarrows full of cash she is likely to receive in compensation. For such a prolific actress, this has been a quiet year, but she’s still glowing from the 2009 hits Julia & Julia and It’s Complicated. Later this year, she will team up with Mamma Mia director Phyllida Law to appear as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Presumably, with fewer disco renditions, than their last collaboration.
9 Sandra Bullock, $15m
It takes a true Hollywood superstar to appear in this list without having even appeared in a film this year. To be fair, Bullock has earned her break after her last film, The Blind Side, won her an Oscar – and troubles in her private life. Her next role could dictate the next 10 years of her career, but appearing in the sentimental 9/11 drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close with Tom Hanks should serve Bullock well if she is planning post-rom com career.
8 Cameron Diaz, $19m
The Shrek and Charlie’s Angels trilogies saw her share the limelight in ensemble casts, but Cameron Diaz is just as comfortable fronting a movie. As well as turning out in Bad Teacher, Green Hornet and Knight and Day recently, her private life means she is rarely out of the tabloids.
7 Katherine Heigl, $19m
The past five years have seen Heigl successfully juggling a major dramatic television role (in Grey’s Anatomy) with a sustained assault on the queendom of romantic comedies. Can command as much as $12m per film after hits such as Knocked Up, 27 Dresses and The Ugly Truth.
6 Kristen Stewart, $20m
Who would have thought that the (uncredited) ring toss girl from 2000’s The Flintstone’s in Viva Rock Vegas would have gone onto be one of the highest earning actresses in the world? This American dream could turn into a nightmare unless she finds a less vampiric source of income. She is committed to five films in the Twilight series and her agent will need to have a clear exit strategy if she’s going to have a lengthy and varied career.
5 Julia Roberts, $20m
Just like her Larry Crowne co-star, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts has had better box office years and a successful Academy Award past. She joins Hanks in being more-or-less assured to survive the commercial disaster of their pairing to go onto bigger and better things. Having previously topped this list several times over, she’ll need to select projects carefully to guarantee a return to the top.
4 Reese Witherspoon, $28m
Reese’s dramatic pieces have lost more money than they’ve made so far this year (How Do You Know = massive flop and Water for Elephants = moderate success) but the golden girl has enough credit in the bank to ride out many a storm. Monsters v Aliens deserves a sequel and an Oscar-winning turn in Walk The Line show she has the acting chops for a sustained career.
3 Jennifer Aniston, $28m
Her personal life sells an awful lot of magazines and her films sell an awful lot of popcorn, making Jen a reliable star to front a movie. With Horrible Bosses, The Bounty Hunter and The Switch, Aniston has featured in a trio of romantic comedies in the past year and each has gone on to make a profit, so we’re likely to see her fall in and out of love for many years to come.
2 Sarah Jessica Parker, $30m
A bank balance supplemented by a clothing range and designer fragrance was largely built on the role of Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. Her starring role in the sequel last year may have upset Abu Dhabi authorities, but is sure to have delighted her accountants.
1 Angelina Jolie, $30m
Angelina has a lot of kids to feed so its good that work is still flowing her way. Carving a niche for herself as one of the premier action heroines, she continues to play variations on the Lara Croft role that escalated her into the big time 10 years ago. This year’s flicks were Salt (originally written for Tom Cruise) and The Tourist and involved her running around a lot firing pistols at people. Whilst, crucially, looking pretty.
