Officially, Halloween might not be until Monday October 31, but plenty of the city’s bars and clubs will be throwing fancy dress parties and fright fests of all shapes and sizes the preceding weekend. We pick out some of the best nights for your buck.
Attack of the Kandi girls Halloween Ball In what is possibly the earliest start to any Halloween party ever, Barasti’s doors will be open from 11am for fancy dressers – though you’ll still be allowed in if you haven’t quite got the nerve to strut around in full costume before noon. The Hed Kandi girls will be providing entertainment from the late afternoon, with a guest set from DJ Andy Warburton. Friday October 28. Free. 11am-3am. Barasti, Le Méridien Mina Seyahi, Al Sufouh Road (04 318 1313).
Good vs Naughty If you like a bit of fancy dress but aren’t too fussed about unleashing your inner dance demon, head over to Boston Bar in Jumeirah, where you can sway at the bar or throw some sillier shapes to R&B tunes from DJ Cheriana. Angels are encouraged to show off their wings and halo, though if you’re slightly less well behaved, the management invite you to show off your darker side with an outfit to match. Selected drinks are a bargain Dhs25 all night, while the night’s best costume wins a night’s stay in a Rotana hotel for two, with breakfast thrown in too. Friday October 28. Free. 8pm-3am. Boston Bar, Jumeira Rotana, Satwa (04 345 5888).
Halloween five: Rise of the Dead As the name suggests, this is Chi’s fifth annual Halloween party, and they’re hoping it will be bigger and scarier than ever. To get punters in the mood, there’s a total Dhs50,000 in prize money up for grabs, with Dhs10,000 each for the scariest male, female and group costumes, and Dhs5,000 for second place. We imagine you will have to think more creatively than the masses to be in with a chance. Friday October 28. Entry TBC. 9pm-3am. Chi@The Lodge, Al Nasr Leisureland, Oud Metha (04 337 9470).
McGettigan’s Spooktacular Weekend As the name suggests, Irish pub McGettigan’s is running a full weekend of fancy dress, with spot prizes such as drinks vouchers, dinner vouchers and overnight stays at the Bonnington Hotel for the best dressed. Prizes will be awarded by DJ John Hayes who will be dressed up himself, and keeping a beady eye on the dancefloor. There will also be live music in the garden on Friday night from Irish singer-songwriter Paul Brady, with tickets priced at Dhs120. Thursday October 27 and Friday October 28. Free. 8pm-2am. McGettigan’s Irish Pub, Bonnington Hotel, Jumeirah Lakes Towers (04 356 0560).
Metal Asylum’s Hellish Halloween It wouldn’t be Halloween without a night of rock’n’roll – and Metal Asylum hasn’t let us down yet. This Halloween’s headliner is rockers Nervecell (who support Metallica in Abu Dhabi this week) playing death and thrash metal, with further live performances from metalcore band Destiny in Chains, progressive metal band Anuryzm, plus covers from the Rock Spiders. Wear your creepiest costume for a chance to win Nervecell memorabilia, Metal Asylum CDs and more. Friday October 28. Dhs80. 9pm-3am. Cheers Bar, The Lodge, Al Nasr Leisureland, Oud Metha (050 100 5171).
Monster Halloween Costume Party According to the organisers, last year’s Halloween party was Nasimi Beach’s biggest night. Naturally, the ambitious bunch are on a mission to outdo themselves this year, once again offering Dhs25,000 in prize money for the best costumes. The best male and female will each take home Dhs7,500, while the best group will get a total Dhs10,000 to split between them (which means you may want to reconsider the size of your group). Expect a variety of music with sets from Tim Cheddar, Smokingroove and David Craig on the night. Friday October 28. Dhs100, Dhs50 for men and free for ladies before 8pm. Doors open 5pm. Nasimi Beach, Atlantis the Palm (04 426 2626).
