The fourth Sandance festival will be remembered for a musical mish-mash of methods. Acoustic Aussie Pete Murray’s gravelly tones accompanied a softly setting sun, before eccentric DJ Norman Jay (MBE!) appeared to pick tracks randomly from his record collection to delightful effect. The Script sung ‘Breakeven’, their hit about falling to pieces, but in many ways they kept the whole thing together – a sea of swooning females congregated around the stage to sing along. The surprise hit were sprightly electro duo Sneaky Sound System, but by the time Groove Armada got behind the decks the Scripters had thinned out, leaving behind a night without any sense of climax. We’re all for variety, yet somehow this line-up lacked that knockout encore moment – but it sure made getting a taxi easier.
