The triumphant Sandance returned for a huge NYE beach party
Time Out Dubai staff
As the first Sandance to sell out – with more than 10,000 people crammed onto the Palm’s Nasimi Beach venue – this was the biggest ticketed NYE bash in town, and one of the biggest nights out Dubai has ever seen. And it had the biggest names to boot; the surprise hit was a sundown set from South African DJ trio Goldfish, who spiced up their killer tunes with live raps, double bass grooves and saxophone licks. For expat Brits of a certain age, it was ‘90s dance duo Basement Jaxx who got the party started. Augmented by their long-time vocalist Vula, UK Top 5 hit ‘Red Alert’ was an early floor-filling highlight. House mastero Roger Sanchez saw the countdown in with style, before trance legends Above & Beyond impressed with a brave set of tracks mainly drawn from last year’s Group Therapy. Competing with a dwindling audience, Sister Bliss paid homage to her Faithless roots, kicking off the set with their 2009 return-to-form ‘Sun to Me’. The most packed bill of talent we’ve seen for some time – after all that, what can the Sandance team possibly do to see in 2013?
