Sander Kleinenberg Wednesday March 14
Dutch DJ Kleinenberg is being flown in for the biggest night yet at Velvet Underground since its relaunch earlier this year. The trance star is known for his inventive VJ dabbling, so we’re expecting a barrage of pretty pictures to accompany his hypnotic sound. Kleinenberg has been on the scene for more than two decades: the founder of Little Mountain Recordings, his ‘This Is’ club nights have been hosted all over the globe. Best-known tunes include ‘My Lexicon’ and ‘Sacred’, both brought to prominence by Sasha on Global Underground 013: Ibiza, while his last artist album, 5K, features an unlikely collaboration with Brit jazz-pop musician Jamie Cullum. Dhs100. 10.30pm-3am. Velvet Underground, Bur Dubai.
See popular Indian singer Sonu Nigam perform live in concert for Absolute India.
Regular - Dhs150, Grandstand - Dhs225, VIP - Dhs595, Platinum - Dhs995. Doors open 6pm, show starts 9pm. Burj Park, Downtown Dubai.
Bob Geldof Live at the Irish Village Thursday March 15
Boomtown Rat and legendary philanthropist Geldof is no stranger to Dubai. We’ve lost count of his like-clockwork appearances; inevitably landing at The Irish Village to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. This year is no different, so expect more of the same – bedraggled hits, a legion of loyal revellers and gallons of the dark stuff. The 60-year-old Nobel Peace Prize nominee is looking increasingly aged these days, but is said to still be on energetic form. Last year saw the release of his first album in a decade, wittily-titled How to Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell, so expect some filler between the Boomtown back-catalogue. Dhs120. 7pm. The Irish Village, Garhoud.
Wonho Chung (80% Arabic, 20% English) Thursday March 15
This March, prepare to be entertained by Wonho Chung, an Arabic speaking stand-up comedian of Korean descent, who is a truly global entertainer. Fresh off his successful stint as host of the 2010 edition of the Dubai International Film Festival, Wonho is now ready to show residents of the city of Dubai the lighter side of life! Chung's comedy career began in 2007 when Show Time Arabia approached him to join the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour as the "Korean" they were looking for. Although they originally seeked a North Korean to complete the Axis, they instead settled for a South Korean, who speaks Arabic. Wonho toured with the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour for a month, performing in 27 shows in front of 20,000 people collectively in Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon and Dubai. Chung's first TV appearance was in a show comedy's follow-up mini-series to the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour in the Middle East, a nine episode reality documentary aptly dubbed "3 guys and Wonho." The show went onto win a golden trophy at the 2008 promax BDA awards ceremony held in Dubai. Balcony - Dhs195, Stalls - Dhs250. 8pm. The First Group Theatre, Jumeirah.
George Benson & Gabrielle Live in Concert Friday March 16
Guitarist Benson has united – and divided – music lovers for decades. Starting life as a feisty bop guitarist in the mid-’60s, by the ’70s he was beginning a slow descent towards vocal pop, which culminated in the ’80s soul balladry for which he became a household name. We hear he’s on jazzy form now, but we’re sure those sultry vocals will make an appearance. In the mid-’90s, it was hard to go near a radio in the UK without hearing wafts of Gabrielle’s hits ‘Dreams’, ‘Rise’ and ‘Out of Reach’. Winner of two Brit Awards (and two Mobos), the soul-pop diva has dipped off the radar, but never let off the pace, with a sixth album pencilled in for later this year. Appearing with George Benson, we’re expecting a dewy-eyed duo. Regular - Dhs195, Grandstand - Dhs225, VIP - Dhs300, Platinum - Dhs500. Doors open 6pm, show starts 9pm. Burj Park, Downtown Dubai. Downtown Burj Khalifa.
Russell Peters Notorious World Tour Tuesday March 20
Comedian Russell Peters may be the most popular funnyman in Dubai. Indeed, he is the only merchant of mirth who has brought down the Time Out Tickets site after his red-hot tickets went on sale! Alas, as such, his tickets sold out not minutes after going on sale. Shame. Lounge opens 7pm, doors open 8pm, show starts 9pm. Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road.
Persian classical musician Sima Bina and jazz and blues star Rana Farhan perform live at the Dubai World Trade Centre at a gala dinner to celebrate Norouz 1391. Regular - Dhs750, VIP - Dhs950. 8pm-3am. Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road.
