Laser hair removal may be the most effective way to permanently banish unwanted hairs, but if you’re saving up for a two-week summer break, chances are you can’t afford to shell out on such costly services. Fortunately, both Braun and Venus have launched new tools in time for summer. We’ve also tested waxing, sugaring and hair removal cream to find the ideal fix to suit a variety of pain thresholds.
The epilator An epilator is a battery-operated device that plucks hairs using what can best be described as tweezers on a rotating wheel. Best for: Bikini line, forearms and legs. Lasts… Between one and three weeks depending on coverage. Pros: It’s not as messy as other techniques, and the regrowth is slower than shaving. It’s also good for getting rid of stray hairs between waxing days. Cons: It’s very painful and takes a lot of time, concentration and a high pain threshold to get even coverage. We recommend: Braun’s SE7891, which you can use in or out of the shower. Dhs599, available at Carrefour, various locations including Mall of the Emirates (800 7 3232).
The cream Hair removal cream is best saved for teens who shouldn’t be left alone with razors and haven’t had their waxing initiation yet. It works by ‘burning’ hair off, so expect your skin to feel tingly afterwards. Best for: Legs. Lasts… Three days before stubble. Pros: It’s pretty painless. Cons: It’s not as long-lasting as waxing, and can irritate sensitive skin – and there’s also the burning hair smell… We recommend: Veet’s hair-removal cream for dry skin. Dhs26.95, available at Aswaaq, Dubai Internet City (04 423 4435).
The wax Waxing has been around for millennia and is the preferred method in the Middle East, where women’s salons offer everything from upper lip to full-body waxing. Best for: Most areas. Lasts... Up to three weeks. Pros: The results last longer, and frequent waxing can mean that the regrowth becomes thinner and less dense. Cons: There will be pain – and plenty of it. You should also check with your salon to make sure they have a ‘no double-dipping rule’ in place (ie they don’t re-use the wax) for the sake of hygiene. We recommend: Tips & Toes. From Dhs30 for upper lip waxing. Various locations including Dubai Media City (04 437 0874).
The razor We’ve tried most products, from men’s disposable single-blade Bic razors to Venus’s new ‘Embrace’ five-blade for women, which boasts a ‘protective ribbon of moisture’ (we think they mean the lubricant pad). Best for: Legs and underarms. Lasts… Two to three days. Pros: It’s painless, unless you’re careless and nick your ankle. Cons: The more frequently you shave, the quicker it grows back. Shaving can also make your skin more prone to dryness and flakiness, so be prepared to moisturise regularly. We recommend: Gilette Fusion razors. They may be designed for facial hair, but it’s the closest shave yet and we swear by them. From Dhs29.95. Available at Aswaaq, Dubai Internet City (04 423 4435).
The sugar Like waxing, sugaring traces its roots back to ancient civilisations in Mesopotamia, when body hair first began to be considered unclean. Best for: Most areas. Lasts… Similar to waxing: about three weeks. Pros: It’s less painful that waxing (the sugar doesn’t stick to the skin). It also wipes off with a wet cloth and leaves no sticky residue. Cons: It’s not as widely available as waxing. We recommend: The Organic Glow Beauty Lounge (formerly Zen Beauty Lounge, located in Discovery Gardens). From Dhs50 for bikini line. Al Wasl Road (04 380 4666).

I agree re Tips n Toes. Like everything they seem to do in there my brazilian wax was pretty slap dash and only lasted 2 weeks.

I would say a big No to Tips and Toes regarding Waxing. It sucks. Me and my friend went there for full arm waxing and returned with burns and on the top of it when we complained, the staff shrugged off as if nothing happened. We even took a photograph and sent to the area manager and there is no reply till now
