There’s no better place to find the perfect temperature than in one of the city’s spas. Not only can they scrub away your weather-ravaged dry bits and rehydrate your parched skin, but there are also a number of great cooling treatments on offer this summer. From peppermint oil to fresh cucumber paste, lemongrass scrubs and even snow rooms, Dubai’s spas have got the city’s sun-stressed boys and girls sorted – we’ve even secured a couple of great two-for-ones to see you through. Get ready to feel refreshed.
Nourish and hydrate A hydrating body treatment for dry, sun-exposed skin, a body mask using cooling and restorative aloe vera and chamomile as well as the relaxing scent of lavender. While you’re wrapped up, you will get to experience a light scalp and shoulder massage, finishing with a gentle full-body massage after a rinse in the shower. The best thing about this treatment is that you get access to the spa’s snow room (pictured). There’s one for men and another for women, both cooled to -4°C, and as it’s not a sudden cooling process (the room cools down gradually), which is claimed to be better for the cardiovascular system – and absolutely worth a try.
Marine algae therapy A cooling, cleansing treatment using marine therapies to re-energise your immune system, improve circulation, detox and enhance skin tone. An algae scrub containing sea lettuce, bio-plasma and sea lavender is administered followed by seaweed. Therapists at the spa claim this is a good way to eliminate ‘bad’ heat from the body. Fonzy cool rating: 4/5 Dhs600. Balance Wellness Club, Oasis Centre Mall, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 384 7010).
Cooling summer ayurveda package A full body massage is followed by a medicated milk bath, which involves cool, milk and herbs, which are poured over the body continuously for 30 minutes. According to ayurvedic theory, the body is made up of three ‘humours’ (vata, pitta and kapha – loosely translating as air, fire and earth), which are addressed by the techniques of this treatment – milk, apparently, calms and soothes when aggression (pitta) is unbalanced. Fonzy cool rating: 4/5 Dhs500. Until August 31. Dubai Herbal and Treatment Centre, Oud Metha (04 335 1200).
Fresh cucumber facial A classic facial using fresh cucumber as a natural cooling agent. Cucumber is also a natural astringent, which means it reduces puffiness and tightens pores – which will not only give you a natural facelift, but also means dirt is less likely to collect and leave you with blemishes over summer.
Knead it massage An intensive massage by expert hands, followed by an application of Elemis’ instant refreshing gel, which will leave your skin cool and tingly, as well as soothing and detoxifying muscles post-massage.
Fonzy cool rating: 4/5 From Dhs390 (book a minimum of three days in advance and get up to 40 percent off treatments). SensAsia Urban Spas, various locations including Emirates Golf Club (04 417 9820).
Cool summer A package featuring a skin-tingling peppermint aromatherapy massage, which simultaneously revives and cools. Guests also get access to the ‘wet’ spa facilities for the rest of the day after their treatment.
Fonzy cool rating: 3/5 From Dhs460. Until August 31. Amara Spa, Park Hyatt Dubai, Deira (04 602 1660).
Cool cosmo journey Pick either the lemongrass or lavender scrub to see you through summer at this spa. Lemongrass in particular is a great natural exfoliant with its own aromatic natural oils, as well as having a cooling effect on stressed skin.
Sun Soother This treatment is ideal for anyone who has gone overboard with the sunbathing recently. A cold lavender and geranium compress calms irritated skin, while posh New Zealand skincare range Sodashi’s after-sun recovery lotion moisturises and rehydrates the skin to prevent further damage. The treatment also includes a wrap to help the absorption of lavender and chamomile extracts, as well as a hair mask to hydrate hair that’s been left dry from the sun and ocean.
Cool spa summer Sink into a refreshing cucumber milk bath before hopping out for a skin-hydrating body scrub using a mixture of sea salt and sugar to get rid of dry summer skin and leave you glowing. Round things off with a back and shoulder massage.
Fonzy cool rating: 3/5 Dhs450. The Spa, The Address Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai (04 438 8025).
Water lily cooling cure A soothing body-wrap to cool your skin, with extracts of water lily and aloe vera to heal irritation. Green tea and chamomile oil are used to relieve any discomfort from sunburn, while an almond oil massage eases muscle tension and boosts lymphatic circulation.
Fonzy cool rating: 3/5 Dhs560. Spa Zen, Radisson Royal Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 308 0531).

The heat penetrates muscles, loosening them and acting as a good preparation for massage, as well as aiding recovery when used afterwards.
