Our favourite tailors for women's clothes in the city
Deepas At this shop, you can pick your fabric and get your tailoring done in one place (many women’s tailors require you to pick up fabric elsewhere). Opt for anything from Italian wool to Japanese crêpe, raw silk and chiffon. The quality of the work has been consistently decent in our experience, though it can take a little longer than some other tailors, so be sure to establish a timeframe in your first visit. From Dhs200 for a simple dress. Opposite Emirates Post Office, Al Satwa Road (04 349 4434).
City Land Tailoring (unisex) City Land’s reputation is such that even tourists are getting in on the action. One on occasion when we visited, we found ourselves chatting to a Belgian gentleman who travels to Dubai twice a year – each time he arrives in the city he visits the tailor to get 15 shirts made. From Dhs150 for a simple dress. Satwa, opposite Satwa Clinic (04 344 5442).
Coventry Tailors (unisex) Located down a side street just past Regal Traders (a great place to pick up fabric), Coventry does spot-on copies, whether you’re taking in an item to be recreated in another fabric, or simply using a few photographs of the product you’re looking for. The staff can also give you advice on which fabrics will work best for different garments – it’s worth taking note of the advice if you’re working with layers, or you could end up wasting your money. From Dhs175 for a simple dress. Off Satwa Road, past Regal Traders (04 344 7563).
Ishwal (unisex) Ishwal and his team are quick to understand what you want, and are best at duplicating free-flowing dresses, or simple designs that don’t require too many fittings. We had two dresses made in a week, for Dhs300 each (minus the cost of the fabric). Though one shoulder strap didn’t sit quite right, they are perfect as outfits to throw on for work. Even better, once you become a regular client they’ll make small alterations (mend holes, repair tears) for free – although tips are eventually, and very modestly, accepted. From Dhs120 for a simple dress. Satwa Road, first right after Deepak’s, turn just before Abdullah Hassan Al Balooshi butchers (04 349 2434).
Khaled Al Attar Tailoring (unisex) Head here for quick alterations or to have a full garment made. It offers a limited range of textiles, and parking tends to be much easier to find than at rival tailors in Bur Dubai. From Dhs175 for a simple dress. Khalid Al Attar Tower, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 332 6500).
Montexa (unisex) This hole-in-the-wall spot owned by English dressmaker Anne Rashid specialises in gowns for big occasions – it’s popular with brides and bridesmaids, as well as women looking to have something unique created for a big event, or get the latest ‘it’ dress copied by experienced hands. From Dhs200 for a simple dress. Off Satwa Road, near Emirates Bank (04 349 4037).
