US hip-hop megastar on stage at Meydan Racecourse concert
Time Out Dubai staff
Rowdy parachutists mingled with excited fans on Saturday night as R’N’B superstar Usher and pop femme fatale Katy Perry put on impressive sets to close this year's World Parachuting Championships. Sweating profusely in a leather-look ensemble, Usher, who bizarrely broke up his set with a bout of push-ups, belted out hits including 'Let It Burn', 'You Make Me' and 'Without You', showing off very strong live vocals. But it was pop princess Katy Perry who stole the show, dressed as Wonder Woman, she arrived via parachute to the tune of Hot N Cold and got the crowd, including a couple of stray security staff, dancing like it was their last night on earth. As fire and confetti exploded from the zany, multi-coloured stage set, Perry owned hits including 'Last Friday Night', 'Fireworks', 'Wake Up' and 'Teenage Dream' - and even pulled up a gaggle of awe-struck fans to the stage during a rendition of Whitney Houston's 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'. We were just a little perturbed by very young fans dancing along to her raunchy 'I Wanna See Your Peacock' routine. Our only complaints? No cash in the ATM by 9pm (coupled with cash-only bars), a lack of taxis (we had to walk out along the highway to find one), poor views for those in general standing (does the Golden Cirtcle really have to be that big?) and a badly organised exit for cars from the carparks. But these points still did little to tarnish a very special night indeed.
