Dubai Marathon 2013
2 Comments 27 January 2013The Lowdown
What: Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon
When: Friday January 25
Where: Downtown Dubai
Almost 24,000 people turned out to pound the streets last Friday, and supporters lining the route brought the figure on Dubai’s streets to an estimated 50,000. Despite the incredible turnout, traffic jams and road closure-related congestion were virtually non-existent for the all-round well-organised event. The only thing early risers were left to contend with was thick fog, severely hampering visibility on the roads, but making for an atmospheric race as the runners emerged from the mist to cross the finish line. Though no records were broken, Ethiopians Lelisa Desisa and Tirfi Tsegaye hotfooted to impressive victories in the men’s and women’s categories, finishing the marathon in two hours, four minutes and 45 seconds and two hours, 23 minutes and 23 seconds respectively.

When the Dubai Marathon was staged for the first time in 1998, no one thought that it would one day emerge as one of the UAE’s biggest sporting events and a highlight on the social calendarwith elite runners flocking to participate in the race. They had a goal from the very first marathon to go far ahead and iam happy that Dubai is making the presence felt in world marathon. Regards,
