The Lowdown What: Emirates Airline Festival of Literature Where: InterContinetal Dubai Festival City When: Tuesday March 5-Saturday March 9
Now celebrating its fifth year, Dubai’s annual LitFest cemented its position on the international calendar with an event that attract more than 100 writers – from literary authors to pulpy crime novelists, poets, historians, kids’ writers and celebrity chefs. Booker Prize-winning novelist Ben Okri declared it ‘unlike any other festival in the world’ after a moving, intimate reading of his latest poetry and essays. There were more highlights than we can count, but we were impressed by the informed wit of British historians Eugene Roth and William Dalrymple, while Indian politician Shashi Tharoor – who spent three decades at the UN before narrowly missing out on the Secretary-General post which went toBan Ki-moon – gave an incredibly engaging speech at the annual Orwell Lecture.
