The lowdown Event: Noel Gallagher and Richard Ashcroft Live at Atlantis When: Friday March 15 Where: Atlantis The Palm, Palm Jumeirah
Richard Ashcroft doesn’t do humble. ‘Legend is an overused term,’ he told the Atlantis crowd, ‘but in my case it’s totally appropriate’. After an hour-long solo set packed with Verve classics including requests from the crowd, and climaxing with ‘Bittersweet Symphony’, we found it hard to argue. Next up was another legend: Noel Gallagher gave a strong set, his new High Flying Birds material sounding bold and fresh - although the crowd reaction proved a little flat overall, with Noel not generous with between-track banter. But acoustic renditions of ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Supersonic’ and set-closer ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ saw ecstatic singalongs, especially towards the front of the beach. ‘I’ll be back every year,’ Noel said from the stage, ‘I’ve got to put my kids through school.’ Some complain there wasn’t more Oasis material, but we were glad to see Gallagher reinvent himself as a credible solo artist, rather than just dining out on the hits. And as for the sneery attitude - it was Noel Gallagher, after all. Sandance favourite DJ Zane Lowe swiftly took over the stage with an updated mix, and his own special brand of Kiwi effervescence.
