Indulge in a sweeter option at one of these six top picks
Berry French toast at Le Pain Quotidien The café chain is a popular spot for breakfast with branches across Dubai. The French toast is served with maple syrup and a selection of forest fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries (although we feel the serving of berries could be more generous), plus a sprinkling of icing sugar. Dhs28. 8am-midnight. Locations citywide, including JBR (04 428 1305), Mall of the Emirates (04 341 0041), Mirdif (04 288 8046) and Sheikh Zayed Road (04 325 0221).
French toast with butterscotch bananas at Circle Café Yes, it is a bit Elvis on the wasteline, but this sweet start to the day is a tasty treat that arrives on appropriately white French toast (as it should do). Dh36.Open daily. 8am-midnight. Circle Cafe, Dubai Media City (04 391 5170).
Gluten-free coconut pancakes at The Farm The garden setting at one of Dubai’s most genuinely breathtaking settings makes it an ideal breakfast location. Gluten-free options on croissants, waffles and pancakes will make it popular with certain diners and we’d recommend the pastrami frittata to anybody. An imaginative selection of side plates (mix of oven roasted mushrooms, lamb sausage, sautéed spinach with nuts) mean there is enough to explore on the menu to warrant repeat visits. Dhs30. Daily 7.30am- noon. Al Barari Estate on Emirates Road. (04 392 5660).
Pain au chocolat at Paul If you want to add a gallic flavour to breakfast, Paul does a decent freshly baked pain au chocolat for a very reasonable Dhs10. Throw in a white Americano and a decent broadsheet and you can pretend to be an intellectual with the best of them. Dhs10. Sun-Thu 9am-11pm, Fri-Sat 9am-11.30pm. Mall of the Emirates, Barsha (04 341 4844). Other locations: Deira City Centre, JBR, Garhoud, Wafi, Mercato Mall, BurJuman.
Pancakes at More Café More Café’s breakfast pancakes are the thick, dense stuff of legend. The emphasis is on the ‘cake’ part, as each of the three in this portion stand almost two inches thick, soaking up your butter and maple syrup like greedy sponges. To really push the boat out, diner-style, order a side of sausage. Dhs27. Side of sausage Dhs14. breakfast available all day. Various locations including Mall of the Emirates (04 395 0967).
Waffles with banana at Waterfront It’s all about the location at this calorie-conscious beachside eatery, but the food lives up to its promise also. Try the tasty waffles with banana and get your date to order the full breakfast of two organic poached eggs served with turkey bacon, chicken sausage and Portobello mushrooms. Dhs45. 8am-11.30am. Waterfront, Jumeirah Beach Hotel (04 406 8999).
