Roots reggae legend gets down at Casa Latina's Drop Dread season opener

The Lowdown Event: Drop Dread with Horace Andy When: Friday September 6 Where: Casa Latina, Ibis Al Barsha
Horace Andy is no stage hog. That was made clear when the (surprisingly pint-sized) reggae legend made a rare Middle Eastern appearance for Drop Dread. Cowering out of view at the side of the stage, Andy’s DJ (the man’s lady, we’re told) laid down the tunes, while members of hosts the Deep Crates Cartel floated around the stage, twiddling knobs to make sure Casa Latina’s primitive soundstystem didn’t implode with the floor-shaking rootsy grooves.
But heck, he may have been invisible, but his voice was unmistakable, shimmering off the venue’s cramped four walls with a surprising intimacy, and a sense of gravity which only a man with 45 years in the business can muster. A reggae take of Massive Attack’s ‘Angel’ was a head-nod to his recent commercial breakthrough alongside the Bristol trip-hoppers, but it was old-school hits like ‘Sky Larking’, and an impassioned a capella closing breakdown, which really cemented this guy’s heritage.
A pretty unique gig for Dubai, we’re looking forward to Drop Dread weighing in with yet more equally authentic and challenging bookings in the new season.
