Kick start your weekend with dance, yoga or meditation

We’re all prone to letting our hair down when the clock hits 6pm at the end of the working week. But every now and then, a quiet night is also in order. For those seeking healthier, alternative ways to spend Thursday evenings and ease (rather than flop) into the weekend, the good news is there are plenty of dance and yoga classes to throw yourself into. From bikram yoga to meditation to contemporary dance, here, we round up the latest on offer around town.
6pm Bikram yoga Brace yourself: a stroll outdoors during the peak of Dubai’s summer has got nothing on this class. Following a rather raspy breathing session, the instructor guides the group through traditional hatha yoga, with the same 26 postures practised in each class in the spacious room, which is heated to a whopping 40 degrees C with 40 percent humidity. As well as sweating up a storm (wear gym clothes you don’t care much for), we guarantee you’ll be amazed at your own flexibility. Best for: Detoxifying. Dhs70 for one hour 30 minutes. Rawr Yoga, Concorde Tower, Dubai Media City (04 423 2808).
6.30pm Hip-hop Taught by Dubai-based Greek-Italian choreographer Ilenia Lonardelli, this classes focuses on LA-style hip-hop, which is based on a technique of fast changes between slow and smooth movement to fast, powerful steps. The aim is to make the choreography match the lyrics. Best for: Those reserving their best moves for Friday. Dhs95 for one hour 30 minutes. James and Alex Dance Studio, Level 8, Concord Tower, Dubai Media City (04 447 0773) www.jamesandalex.com.
Contemporary dance This expressive style combines elements of a number of genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Beginners will learn how to do moves such as the Running man and kick-ball change. The studio offers drop-in classes for those wishing to attend sporadically, but they also offer beginners, intermediate and advanced courses for dedicated movers and shakers. Best for: Those looking for a new hobby to try. Dhs65 for one hour, Dhs95 for one hour 30 mins. James and Alex Dance Studio, Level 8, Concord Tower, Dubai Media City (04 447 0773) www.jamesandalex.com.
Ashtanga 1 This yoga school runs guided Thursday night classes introducing students to Ashtanga yoga with emphasis on alignment. It’s suitable for beginners and helps to build upper body strength as well as stability in the legs. It’s the ideal way to unwind, as it relieves pain, increases flexibility, detoxifies the body, corrects spinal alignment and tones muscles to have you ready for brunch. Best for: Those with a brunch on the next day. Dhs75 for one hour and 15 minutes. The Yoga Room, Cluster Y, Swiss Tower, JLT (050 518 9966).
7pm Zumba Fitness Combining a range of Latin-inspired choreography and energising music, this calorie-burning class will leave you sweating and bursting with energy. It uses unique moves and combinations that anyone can pick up (though, admittedly to begin with, you’ll be in fits of laughter at your own reflection). From Dhs40 to Dhs65 for one hour. Dance Fit, Unit 105, First Floor, Al Sayyah Building, Interchange 4 Sheikh Zayed Road (04 388 4157).
7.30pm Yoga 360 This mixed group class combines traditional yoga poses, breathing, and meditation taught by instructors familiar with Hatha yoga disciplines and traditions. Postures (or asanas) involve various movements such as forward, lateral and back bending, twists and inversions. Best for: Letting go after a particularly stressful week. Dhs70 per session for non-members for 50 minutes. Fitness 360, Group training studio, Mazaya Centre (04 330 7711).

Certain colours are sprayed and inhaled to help calm the mind. Best for: Winding down after a long day. Dhs60 for one hour.
