We look back at a decade of famous faces at Dubai’s Film Fest
The fi lm festival launched with a bang thanks to visits from Morgan Freeman, Desmond Tutu, Orlando Bloom and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Celebs were thinner on the ground: Laurence Fishburne stopped by, as did Lifetime Achievement Award winner Morgan Freeman (again).
Maverick director Oliver Stone picked up a Lifetime Achievement Award; Richard Gere, Nick Cannon and Diane Kruger were also in town.
Sharon Stone, George Clooney, Dita Von Teese, Michelle Yeoh and The Deer Hunter director Michael Cimino boosted the star appeal in 2007.
Nicolas Cage, Ben Affl eck and Anil Kapoor brought testosterone to the event, while Goldie Hawn, Salma Hayek and Laura Linney added grace.
Queen Noor Al Hussain, Desmond Tutu and Monaco’s ruler Prince Albert II stepped onto the red carpet, along with ’80s teen idol Matt Dillon.
Jim Sturgess, Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth all visited, but Sean Penn stole the headlines after cancelling his Dubai trip to help the aid effort in Haiti.
The eighth edition of DIFF made headlines around the world when Tom Cruise came to town for the world of premiere of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, joined by co-stars Paula Patton and Simon Pegg. But the Cruiser wasn’t the only one turning heads, with starlet Scarlett Johansson, Oscar winner Colin Firth, Bollywood heavyweight Shah Rukh Khan, comic Owen Wilson and arty auteur Werner Herzog also in town.
While there’s was no sucker-punch to rival Tom Cruise’s appearance a year earlier, this ninth edition was still bursting with talent, including Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Kevin Spacey, plus red carpet shows from Rooney Mara, Kirsten Davis, Cuba Gooding Jr and Michael Apted, and a return visit from Colin Firth.
The tenth anniversary edition of DIFF, which runs from December 6-14, is set to welcome a bumper bill of talent, including Martin Sheen – who’ll pick up the Lifetime Achievement Award –Mark Ruffalo, Abigail Breslin, Michael B Jordan, Jim Sheridan and Andy Serkis, Bollywood stars Irfann Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Priyanka Chopra, and a return visit from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. A year to remember.
