Our pick of the best international comedy gigs of the past 12 months
Time Out Dubai staff
Best comedy gig in Dubai Winner Michael McIntyre Billed as the ‘world’s most successful’ comedian, McIntyre is a household name to many, and over a storming Dubai set he delivered his famed style of English self deprecating comedy to a laugh-full room. Hosted by Done Events @ Dubai World Trade Centre (June 7-8 2013).
Highly Commended Best comedy gig in Dubai Al Murray For his umpteenth visit to Dubai Murray graduated to the big leagues with a huge show at Dubai World Trade Centre in front of hundreds of (mainly British, often balding) expats, all eager to hear the vitriolic outbursts of Murray’s very own very British, very balding creation, The Pub Landlord. Staged by Done Events @ Dubai World Trade Centre (November 4 2013).
Punchline Comedy Club with John Lenahan After a summer lull this September bill from newcomers Punchline gave us something to laugh about, with bizarre American comic John Lenahan (he did magic tricks, really – and it worked) topping the bill. Hosted @ Emirates Golf Club (September 12 2013) and Jumeirah Creekside Hotel (September 19 2013).
Jason Byrne, McGettigan’s After his dynamically silly Cirque du Byrne at Almas Towers in 2012, Byrne came back with a new, serious and streamlined show... oh who are we kidding, Jason Byrne’s Special Eye was just as silly, packed with a healthy portion of ironic Irish chat and irreverent asides. Hosted by McGettigan’s @ Almas Towers (September 10-11 2013).
Highly Commended Best comedy gig in Dubai Laughter Factory with Justin Moorhouse, Mike Gunn, Paul Sinha Fresh from winning an outstanding contribution award for their endless services to regional comedy at last year’s awards ceremony, The Laughter Factory weighed in with another year of top comedy. With this event, they saved some of the best to last, with a fantastic cast of returning pros and audience favourites. Various venues (January 15-23 2014).
Laughter Factory with Phil Nichol, Gordon Southern and Josh Howe Fresh from winning a lifetime achievement award for their endless services to region comedy at last year’s event, The Laughter Factory again weighed in with another year of top comedy. With a top bill of equally hilarious talents, this diverse night ranked among the best. Various venues (December 4-12 2013).
McGettigan’s Comedy Fest Now turning into something of an annual post-NYE heart-warming institution, this year’s Comedy Fest moved to a larger venue at neighbouring Almas Towers, with a quintet of top comics performing over two nights. Hosted by McGettigan’s @ Almas Tower (January 9-10 2014).
Omid Djalili The huge British comic returned to Dubai for a memorable set of cheeky humour at DWTC. Hosted by Yak Events @ Dubai World Trade Centre (October 11, 2013).
The Wayans Brothers The brash brother double act behind the Scary Movie franchise brought their new set of stand-up comedy to Dubai for two nights, packed with lewd jokes and a manic delivery instantly recognisable from their onscreen exploits. Hosted by Yak Events @ Dubai World Trade Centre (June 21-22 2013).
Tommy Tiernan Billed as ‘Ireland’s most controversial’ comedian, Tommy Tiernan was on (relatively) subdued mode for his Dubai gig – but that didn’t make him any less funny. Hosted by The Irish Village @ Dubai Tennis Stadium (March 21 2013).
