Where to sample the food of the Latin American country around town
Apparently, there are two things in life that inspire fevered passion and enthusiasm: food and football. Chances are that only one of those two appeals to you. But whichever your chosen obsession might be, right now all eyes are on South America to satisfy our craving for both. While Dubai has been in the grip of a Latin dining trend for some time now, football fans are turning their gaze to Brazil for the FIFA World Cup, starting next week on Thursday June 12. In honour of the beautiful game kicking off its biggest world tournament, we take a look at the inside track on Brazil’s other most popular talent, its cuisine.
Fruteiro do Brasil Street-side stalls selling ‘vitaminas’ (aka fresh juices) in all manner of tropical fruit flavours are as common in Brazil as football fans. At this new juice bar in JBR you can sample these fresh and fruity Brazilian concoctions. There is even a beach to complete the Rio-inspired experience. The Beach, The Walk, JBR (no number).
Sweet Brasilian Café This is arguably Dubai’s first Brazilian concept (not including the women-only Boteko Brasil in Dubai Ladies Club). The colourful café (decorated in patriotic yellow, green and blue) specialises in both sweet and savoury Brazilian pastries and breads, although there is plenty more on the menu to try. Al Seef 2, JLT (050 873 8980).
Chamas The last in Dubai’s spree of churrasco-concepts to launch, this style of restaurant serves endless cuts of barbecued meats, sliced from skewers at the table. Chamas occupies a vast dining space and lounge and the venue happens to have a Brazilian chef at the helm. Crowne Plaza Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 331 1111).
Fogo Vivo Enjoy the churrasco experience in stylish surroundings, down to the red and black decor and even the attractive crockery on the table. Diners can also sample items from the dessert trolley. JA Ocean View Hotel, The Walk, JBR (04 814 5599).
Fogueira Restaurant & Lounge Dubai’s first standalone churrascaria, there’s a more rustic and intimate vibe here, including the style of decor. Dine on the terrace in cooler months for great views of the Marina. Ramada Plaza Jumeirah Beach Residence, The Walk, JBR (04 439 8888).
Frevo This churrascaria boasts live music, views of the sea and excellent service. There’s a slightly different approach to the dishes, such as a soup option to start, but served at the table. Fairmont The Palm, Palm Jumeirah (04 457 3457).
