Talented Lebanese pianist launches new album Lisan Al Tarab in Dubai
Time Out Dubai staff
Lebanese-born, New York-based pianist Tarek Yamani launched his new record in Dubai with a stunning gig at JLT’s Jazz@Pizza Express. Recorded along NYC sidemen, Lisan Al Tarab is a staggering achievement, pitting classical Arabic tunes in the context of a modern jazz trio with surprising depth and invention. Yamani was backed here by the UAE’s own Rony and Elie Afif, who did a phenomenal job keeping up with the prodigious pianist’s melodic explorations, and the arrangements ‘knotty rhythmic idiosyncrasies. Packed with a surprisingly affluent crowd, the venue really shone in this context, and hinted at the potential for Jazz@Pizza Express to act as a hub for more groundbreaking GCC showcases and record launches. Here’s to more great music soon.
