What: Ben Waters Trio Where: The Music Room, Majestic Hotel Tower When: Friday September 5
‘I toured with Chuck Berry twice, and he told me if you can’t dance to this, there’s a hole in your soul,’ announced Ben Waters, before lurching into Berry’s 1964 hit ‘You Never Can Tell’, of Pulp Fiction’s Jack Rabbit Slim dance-off fame. It was Waters’ third number, and from then on the dancefloor was packed as the pianist steamed his trio through vintage hits by everyone from Elvis to Ian Dury, often without pausing for breath: One incredible medley lurched from The Police to ‘Let It Be’, into John Denver’s ‘Country Roads’, reggae style, then to Bob Markey before ending back on Chuck Berry (‘Maybelline’). ‘I got Keith’s permission to play this,’ added Waters, a mate of the Stones, before launching into chiming guitar anthem ‘Honky Tonk Women.’ If you can play it like this Ben, you don’t need to ask.
