There are no two ways about it, the credit crunch has hit Dubai so let’s behave accordingly...
Money’s never been so tight, for many of us in Dubai. Here’s how to weather the storm, in six easy steps
Maid madness (save Dhs100)
Ok, so it’s pretty cheap to have a bit of help around the house in Dubai, but how much do you really need? It’s time to start doing your own washing and ironing and cut down the hours you pay for assistance. One day a week is enough to keep most homes in check
Nail it (save Dhs140)
Would you have dreamt of getting someone else to paint your nails if you weren’t in Dubai? You would? Well you’re obviously posher than us. There’s no need to let yourself go, a monthly mani/pedi is perfectly acceptable, but those weekly files and polishes certainly are not. By a bottle of your favourite colour, grab a nail file, and do it yourself. Just think of it as being retro.
Be the host with the most (Save Dhs300+)
We all love a brunch, but there’s no need to make them a regular event. Why not have friends over for lunch instead. Cook something cost-effective like pasta and ask friends to bring extras like salads and deserts. If you’re still in need of an outing, you can all pop out for a couple of drinks at your favourite bar afterwards.
Share, and share alike (save Dhs200+)
Swapping and sharing clothes is more of a girl thing, but it needn’t be. Everyone can get involved. Think DVD and game swaps for boys, as well as trading clothes and handbags for the ladies, and you’ve saved yourself a pricey new purchase and got something new and fun to wear/pay with/admire. Excellent.
Take it away (save Dhs50+)
What’s wrong with you? You have a perfectly good kitchen, so stop forking out for takeaways. It’s time to try out the oven and get cooking, instead of ordering in. You can even make enough for lunch the next day to save some extra dosh. Yes, you can. Go and have a go, it’s easy.
Can the coffee (save Dhs75)
Ok, it’s a big ask, but you can save a packet by going without your daily Dhs15 latte. You don’t need to skip the fix altogether, just make your own. The walk to the kitchen will do you good and you might find you drink less. Everyone’s a winner.
