If you can't beat them, join them at one of these stripped-back spots
Hispters, apparently, have evolved into yuccies: Young Urban Creatives (aka entrepreneurial types who dream of solving world hunger by opening sustainable chains of Chemex-only coffee joints). They’re the same thing though, really. And there are plenty of them in the city, which means Dubai has finally caught on to the worldwide trend for industrial aesthetics and drinks in copper tumblers.
If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em for a chat about your growing collection of vinyl at one of these yuccie-hipster hotspots.
1 Brunswick Sports Club In all honesty, some of our favourite bars have made this list. Brunswick scooped our Highly Commended award for Best Sports Bar this year, but when it comes to décor, it hits the nail on the industrial-chic head with exposed brick and iron furniture. Plus, it runs cool pop-ups such as Uncle Jheff’s (“thai eats. sick beats”) and funky music nights including Neo Soul Waves every Wednesday. Open daily noon-2am. Sheraton Dubai Mall of the Emirates Hotel, Al Barsha (056 404 0685).
3 Casa Latina “I’m redecorating my house in Marfa, Texas,” is a sentence we genuinely overheard at Casa Latina’s wildly popular monthly shindig Bad House Party (www.badhouseparty.com). It’s quirky, the music is excellent and there are always weird props floating about. This place is so low-key it’s cool, and you can also head here to dance to drum ’n’ bass at Bassworx, another monthly event (www.bassworx-dxb.com). Open daily 6pm-3am. Ibis Al Barsha (04 399 6699).
4 Cubano Lito All things Cuban are trendy these days, and this eclectic bar is jumping on the bandwagon with peeling wood, faux crumbling plaster, leather barbershop chairs and hefty fans hanging from the ceiling. Very Havana. Open daily 5pm-2am. Ibis One Central Hotel, Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 519 5523).
6 Las Vegas Nightclub This under-the-radar club lures in the alt-crowd with discounted Ravi’s every Friday. Extra-edgy night Satwa 3000 (www.facebook.com/satwa3000) also runs here, and then on Thursday May 11, an underground club night fusing European, Gulf and Indian dance music called Donut Donut is on and a DJ named Death Paratha is playing. What’s not to love? Dhs75. Thu May 11, 9pm-3am. Chelsea Plaza Hotel, Satwa, www.residentadvisor.net (04 398 3687).
7 Nola This bar epitomises the hipster aesthetic with its New-England-meets-American-deep-South vibe. It’s standing room only most Thursday nights – don’t say we didn’t warn you. Open daily noon-3am. Armada BlueBay Hotel, Cluster P, JLT (04 399 8155).
8 Stereo Arcade The fact that you can play retro arcade games here really says it all. The pub has live music all week, Thursdays in the club are all about ’90s tracks and everything looks ’80s and neon. Open daily 6pm-3am. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Dubai – Jumeirah Beach, JBR (052 618 2424).
10 The Music Room See everything from German punk rock to Russian techno here. Ideal if you like following obscure bands on SoundCloud. Open daily 6pm-3am. Majestic Hotel Tower, Bur Dubai (04 501 2534).
