8 perfect places to catch the Champions League final
Chilled vibes, Irish pub or beach bar, the choice is yours
Barasti The legendary beach haunt opposite Dubai Marina has a massive 7 metre x 4 metre screen showing the game inside Barasti Beach Summer Tent, which will enclose the middle deck measuring a whopping 30 metres x 40 metres and 8 metres tall. With the space chilled to 22⁰C day and night, the match will be shown in pretty much perfect conditions. Open 11am-1.30am. Le Méridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Umm Suqeim (04 318 1313).
The Dubliner’s This popular Irish sports bar in Garhoud has long since been adopted by Celtic supporters as their home from home. Grab some sharing plates and kick back to watch the big match – get there early though since it’s usually pretty packed when there’s a game on. Open noon-2am. Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Airport Road, Garhoud (04 702 2455).
Kickers Kickers is bright and spacious in the day and filled with regulars in the evening, and if there’s a match on, which funnily enough there is this weekend, it’s especially worth going out of the way for if you don’t live in the area thanks to the abundance of flat-screen TVs. A laid-back hangout with foosball and pool tables. Open 12.30pm-3.30am. Sports Village, Dubai Sports City (04 448 1001).
Reform Social & Grill Reform, over at The Lakes, has just reformed (get it?) its menu in time for the Champions League final. The classic British gastropub is putting on a bunch of new roast dinner options, including mustard-crusted Angus beef and half a roast chicken, complete with all the trimmings: roasted root veg, fluffy roast potatoes and a massive Yorkshire pudding. Open 8am-midnight. Reform Social & Grill, The Lakes (04 454 2638).
McGettigan’s DWTC This chain of Irish pubs can turn its hand to just about anything. Live music, good food, comedy nights, quiet drinks or big nights out – all seem to find their way into the location. Sometimes all on the same day. The Dubai World Trade Centre branch can be quieter than its JLT sister, but it livens up when the big game is on, and there’s a pretty big match on this weekend. Open daily noon-2am, Dubai World Trade Centre (04 378 0800).
Nezesaussi Grill, Manzil Downtown Dubai We’ve long been fans of Downtown sports bar Nezesaussi, named for its New Zealand, South African and Australian leanings and loved for the huge range of events and matches it screens on any given day.
The new venue is home to two pool tables, a foosball table, one giant screen – devoted to the big game of the day – dominating the back wall, and numerous others mounted over almost every table (it has 23 in total). You barely need to swivel 45 degrees to fill your face with sport. Open daily 4pm-2am, The Address, Dubai Marina (04 436 7777).
Vantage Vantage in the Sheraton Dubai Mall of the Emirates Hotel is offering multiple screens upon which to watch the game, accompanied by rustic-flavours and gastropub cuisine. Special promotions will be available throughout the evening at this relaxed spot so you can kick back for kick off. Open 11am-2am. Sheraton Dubai Mall of the Emirates, Al Barsha (04 377 2356).
Warehouse Over at Le Méridien Dubai Hotel and Conference Centre next to DXB, Warehouse is celebrating final day with a couple of mammoth food challenges. The Hot Seat challenge is for those who like something with a little bit of spice. Well, by that we mean eight chicken wings smothered in sauce made of the world’s hottest chili – the Carolina Reaper. The name says it all really. Finish every bite of these eight wings in eight minutes to win the challenge – oh, and get through five definitely-pain-free minutes before having a drink to cool your lips. Complete the challenge and get your name up on the Warehouse Wall of Fame.
Though if spice isn’t your thing, perhaps a massive burger is? If so, crack into the Mouthful Burger Challenge during half-time. Three patties, 12 rashers of bacon, one fried eg, 120 grams of spare ribs and 150 grams of cheddar cheese. Open noon-3am. Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Airport Road, Garhoud, www.warehouse-dubai.com (04 702 2455).
