See the sun go down from behind the glass at these nine hotspots
There surely can’t be a finer way to end of the working day than by watching the sun set over the water. Yes, we know it’s hot out there, which is why we’ve rounded up some the best venues to witness this wonderful solar phenomenon from air-conditioned environs…
Asia Asia The venue puts as much love into its food as it does its drinks. Even though it’s too sticky to sit outside, console yourself in the fact that you’re at a spot so good we named it Bar of the Year in 2016. Open Sat-Thu 4pm-2am; Fri noon-2am. Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 276 5900).
At.mosphere Lounge If you’ve never seen the sun set from the world’s loftiest restaurant, you truly have never lived. The Lounge is as pretty as the vista, and though the prices can seem a little elevated, it’s worth splashing out here, for the chance to gawp out of the window. Minimum spend Dhs250 per person until September 30, Dhs320 per person thereafter. Open daily 5.30pm-2am. Burj Khalifa, Downtown Dubai (04 888 3828).
BiCE Sky Bar Its perch might not be as lofty as some of its rivals, but the views BiCE Sky Bar offers at sunset are no less appealing. With creative mixed beverages, live music and cracking seafood, this JBR haunt is intimate, charming and great for both couples and groups of friends. Open daily 5pm-2.30am. Hilton Dubai Jumeirah, The Walk, JBR (04 318 2319).
Gold on 27 This Burj Al Arab offering is doing its best to counteract the exclusivity of the hotel. Yes, it’s fancy, but provided you don’t turn up in flip-flops, Gold on 27 welcomes you to try its inventive mixed drinks as you gaze at the Arabian Gulf in a golden daze. Open daily 6pm-2am. Burj Al Arab, Umm Suqeim (800 4653 6627).
Il Faro Trattoria & Lounge While some are drawn here for the pizzas, it’s undoubtedly the views that will live longer in the memory. Offering panoramas of the Arabian Gulf, “The Lighthouse” is a quaint, Mediterranean-inspired joint whose lounge has the better vistas and a varied selection of bubbly and grape to accompany them with. Open daily noon-midnight. Azure Residences, Palm Jumeirah (04 568 3137).
Iris Dubai Once you’ve found your way to this bar on the 27th floor of The Oberoi Dubai, you’ll be glad you made the effort for Iris because the sight that greets you is one to behold. Sleek, slick and with cracking views of the city (and the sunset), if you stick around past the generous happy hour, you can tuck into some pretty fine fare in laid-back surroundings, too. Open Sat-Thu 6pm-2am; Fri noon-5pm, 6pm-2am. The Oberoi Dubai, Business Bay (056 951 1442).
Q43 Media City isn’t everyone’s go-to place for a night out (unless you happen to work there), but this buzzing bar has plenty to offer the party crowd. If you get here early, you can grab the best seat in the house as day turns into night. Wednesdays mean one thing, the “Don’t Wait Up” lads’ night, with a triple happy hour and free pool. Open Sun-Wed 11am-2am; Thu 11am-3am; Fri-Sat 5pm-3am. Media One Hotel, Dubai Media City (04 443 5403).
The Observatory Despite a couple of iffy recent experiences at The Observatory, we still love this bar, which has one of the best vantage points for views of Dubai Marina, the Palm Jumeirah and the setting sun. The daily “Power Hour” offers mixed beverages for Dhs25 from 7pm to 8pm, while the ladies’ night offer every Monday is a popular draw. Open daily noon-1am. Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites, Dubai Marina (04 319 4795).
Vault Given its name, you’d think Vault would dwell in the depths of the world’s tallest hotel. But it takes pride of place on the 71st and 72nd floors, making it a top spot for city views. The daily happy hour offers drinks starting at Dhs30 from 5pm to 7pm. Open Sat-Thu 5pm-3am; Fri 4pm-3am. JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, Business Bay (04 550 9110).
