We bring you eight top bars at which to kick off your Thursday night
As the clock ticks towards 6pm on a Thursday you can almost smell the weekend (unless you’re a boss. Then it’s probably already started by that point).
After a week of honest slog, it’s only fair for you to let your hair down – Thursday is the new Friday, after all. So here’s our selection of post-work bars that have a real buzz (and deals that will save you some of your hard-earned dirhams).
1Bahri Bar It might seem a bit swish for all the weekend warriors, but looks can be deceptive. When its time to down tools, this place fills up rapidly. We adore the vistas of the Arabian Gulf (Bahri means “sea view” after all) and of the Burj Al Arab. And there are discounts on beverages from 4pm to 9pm. Open Sat-Wed 4pm-2am; Thu-Fri 4pm-3am. Jumeirah Mina A’Salam, Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim (04 432 3232).
2Cargo Pier 7 is a great choice for the post-work party crowd, but if it’s mostly a few rounds and an atmosphere you’re seeking, let your hair down at Cargo. If you can find a spot on the terrace you’ll have some fine vistas of the Marina, but the area near the bar is good, too, especially if you don’t mind rubbing shoulders with your neighbour. Happy drinks come in at Dhs25 from 5pm to 8pm. Open Sun-Thu 4pm-2am, Fri 12.30pm-2am, Sat noon-2am. Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 361 8129).
3 Dusty’s A lot of people we know who work in DIFC can’t wait to get out when the weekend arrives, but if you do stick around, there are bargains to be had. We love lots of things about Dusty’s (the eccentric décor being one of them) but what makes it stand out in the financial district is the friendliness of the staff and the laid-back yet buzzing vibe. Plus there’s selected drinks at Dhs30 from 5pm to 8pm, too. Open Mon-Fri 8am-2am, Sun 8am-midnight (closed Sat). Al Fattan Currency House, DIFC (04 354 5435).
4Fibber Magee’s Yes, yes, we know it’s a Dubai “institution” but while such titles can be bandied around with total abandon, Fibbers has well and truly earned it. If your office is on Sheikh Zayed Road, it makes complete sense to head over to this homely, no-frills pub on a Thursday. Happy hour runs from 4pm to 7pm and if you have any stamina left in you after a week of graft, Paddyman plays some top traditional tunes for you to groove to from 10pm. Open daily 8am-2am. Saeed Tower One, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 332 2400).
5 Lock, Stock & Barrel If you live or work in Barsha Heights (or even if you don’t) there really is only one place you should go after clocking off for the week. Lock, Stock & Barrel is rocking regardless of what time it is, but the buzz is rarely better than during the Thursday social. The night features a funky soundtrack, top bar staff and great pub grub to tuck into, plus, buy one, get one free drinks from 4pm to 8pm. Open Mon-Thu 4pm-3am, Fri 1pm-3am; Sat-Sun 2pm-3am. Grand Millennium Hotel Dubai, Barsha Heights (04 514 9195).
6 McGettigan’s JLT Anyone who has ever set foot in this perennially popular bar at 6.02pm (or thereabouts) on a Thursday will know just how heaving it can be. Spirits are high, there’s live music and an extended happy hour until 9pm (as well as the odd all-you-can-drink promotion from time to time). So join the scrum and see what all the fuss is about. Open Sun-Fri noon-3pm; Sat 11am-3am. Bonnington Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Cluster J, JLT (04 356 0470).
7 Mr Miyagi’s and Cobra Kai Out of the ashes of Crab Tavern and Spirito has risen a restaurant and bar duo that has instantly created a buzz around Media City. The more adventurous of media types will be headed here at the end of a long working week. Mr Miyagi’s is technically a restaurant, but it’s jam-packed on a Thursday, as is the adjoining Cobra Kai bar. But if you can squeeze in for a few hours, it’s worth it for the atmosphere, and the street food-style grub too. Happy hour runs from 4pm to 8pm, too, when drinks start from Dhs25. Open daily 11am-2am. Media One Hotel, Dubai Media City (04 420 7489).
8 Nola With Nola and Mythos sharing the same JLT cluster, the Armada BlueBay Hotel is a cracking choice as you put the worries of the work world behind you. Nola is just a really cool place to hang out in, with some lovely Deep South-inspired grub to refuel you at the end of a busy week. The bar staff are a joy, too, and if you’re here between 5pm and 7pm you’ll get selected drinks at half the price. Linger for a bit longer and you’ll be treated to some live music, too. Open daily noon-3am. Armada BlueBay Hotel, Cluster P, JLT (04 399 8155).
