Dubai’s freakiest freakshakes, plus a few low-key options, too
It’s a well-known fact that the humble milkshake is the inspiration for some of the world’s greatest ever songs. Boom, Shake, Shake, Shake The Room? Shake it off? Twist and Shout (“Shake it, shake it, shake it up baby now”)? And, obviously, any song by Shakin’ Stevens.
OK, that might not be strictly true, but the aforementioned humble shake is a beloved tradition for eateries here in Dubai. And over here they’re less humble and more in-your-face freaky freakshakes.
Here are 15 of Dubai’s best. Drink it in.

BroNut Monster Shake at Fümé If a milkshake could say “come at me, bro” like some frat house college student, this self-proclaimed monster shake would. The choccy milkshake itself comes with its own little brownie bodyguard, and if you want a piece of the shake, you’ll have to get through a piece of the cake first. All the more reason to persevere, as far as we’re concerned. You might feel a little woozy afterwards, but you can just whoop and cheer it off like an overexcited jock who’s just scored the match-winning touchdown. Dhs52. Open Sun-Wed 9am-1am; Thu-Sat 9am-2am. Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 421 5669).
Cake Shake at Black Tap If looks are anything to go by, this might just be one of the most filling, freakiest freakshakes Dubai has ever seen. Priced at Dhs65, fill your face with glorious cake batter milkshake adorned with a vanilla frosting-coated rim, peppered with rainbow sprinkles. The milkshake is then topped with a slab of cake, coated with whipped cream and finished off with a cherry on top for good measure. Of course, Cake Shake’s signature ingredient – the cake, obviously – is freshly baked in Black Tap’s own kitchens every day, so there will be a limited number of the shakes to be had. Dhs65. Open daily 11am-12.30am. Jumeirah Al Naseem, Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim (04 422 9904).
Chocolate Oreo Milkshake at McDonald’s This is a legendary product the world over, and while the McDonald’s milkshake recently brought to Dubai might not be as jaw-achingly thick as its international cousins, this Oreo milkshake has got some real flavour, an enjoyably drinkable texture and even a few cheeky chunks thrown in for good measure. It’s like a drinkable McFlurry, which gets top marks in our books. From Dhs11. McDonald’s, various locations across Dubai.
Frrrozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity 3 The Frrrozen Hot Chocolate is a classic at Serendipity 3, and a treat that has gained this restaurant huge publicity since long before the New York City export reached Dubai’s shores. It’s more than 50 years old, and Oprah even said one sip of it left her wanting to “dance on the chandeliers”. But, aside from filling you with the need to twinkle-toe all over the lighting infrastructure, this is one heck of a dessert. Or mid afternoon snack, if that’s what you’re into. From Dhs35. Dubai Festival City (04 284 3149); City Walk (04 394 9672).
Marks & Spencer Belgian Milk Chocolate Milkshake at, well, Marks & Spencer Tell us there’s a better bottled milkshake available on store shelves in Dubai and we’ll literally laugh in your face. If you’re not in the mood for a colossal milkshake in a restaurant, getting this relatively miniature dose of chocolatey, milkshakey goodness is second to none. We mean it, it’s that good. Dhs18. M&S Food Stores across Dubai, including Dubai Marina Promenade (04 447 1623).
Strawberry Milk Bar Milkshake at Boston Lane Avoid E numbers at all costs? You can still treat yourself to a milkshake thanks to this Dubai pitstop. These milkshakes from Aussie expat restaurant Boston Lane in Al Quoz are made of good, honest ingredients. No fake strawberry flavour here, just milk, ice cream and real, quality strawberries. And it rocks. Dhs20. Open daily 8am-6pm. 4B Street, Al Quoz (054 444 9306).
Oreo and Banana Milkshake at Johnny Rockets Johnny Rockets doesn’t do things by halves. Nor should it, because this is a novel, and simply delicious milkshake worthy of making it on to any delivery order. Think Oreos and bananas all whipped up with a bunch of ice cream, poured into a cup, sealed up and sent to your door. We prefer it while sitting on the sofa, shamefully burying out faces into a chilli-cheese dog while watching Netflix in our old and slightly ripped pyjamas. Bliss. From Dhs21. Various locations across Dubai, including Marina Walk (600 564 669).
Oh Fudge! at Coldstone Creamery Now THIS is a milkshake. The popular ice cream chain is known for its whopping-great selection of flavours, and its repurposing of ice cream into milkshake is something to behold. Four or five generous chunks of ice cream, delicately slung into a blender along with fudge-flavoured sauce and a glug of milk just to loosen things up a little. The output is spectacular. Genuinely one of the very best milkshakes this town has to offer, and possibly one of our favourite ever. For an extra little kick, ask the staff to kindly drop a cheeky scoop of mint in the top, and you’re onto an After Eight-ish winner. Then go to the gym. Twice. From Dhs18. Various locations across Dubai, including Mall of the Emirates, Al Barsha (055 213 6501).
Popping Cereal Monster Shake at Fümé Fümé has shakes all figured out. This monster shake (served in a hipster mason jar) is like breakfast, lunch and din dins all packed together. It’s a fusion of luscious ice cream, crackly popcorn, sweet caramel and salty pretzels – a lip-smackingly good combination of flavours. If you’re more of a chocolate family, then definitely go for the BroNut monster shake. Dhs52. Open Sun-Wed 9am-1am, Thu-Sat 9am-2am. Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 421 5669).
Stand By Me Hershey’s shake at CLAW BBQ This is a shake we revel in. It’s ludicrous, but it’s just. So. Good. This is one of Claw BBQ’s range of milkshakes inspired by classic US films and TV. Melted Hershey’s chocolate is swirled around vanilla ice cream. Chocolate M&Ms are stuck to the side of the glass with frosting (because why not?) and a pretty hefty chunk of chocolate brownie is stuck into a mound of whipped cream to top it all off. Dhs40. Open daily noon-2am. Souk Al Bahar, Downtown Dubai (04 432 2300).
Strawberry, Beef Bacon and Mini Burger at Sugar Factory Okay, okay, we know what you’re thinking. Just, hear us out. Some people might think a cheeseburger atop a milkshake is a step too far, but think about it. You’re not going to get to the bottom of your milkshake before you have the cheeseburger, so think of it in the order in which you’ll eat it. Cheeseburger, followed by milkshake – a classic pairing. Just pop the burger off the top, munch it down and crack on with the shake. Vanilla ice cream blended with heavy cream and strawberry puree, generously topped with whipped cream and salted pretzels in a chocolate-covered mug dotted with M&Ms and rainbow sprinkles and a nice and necessary mini bacon cheeseburger on top. It’s dinner and dessert all in in one. In fact, you’re saving time by getting this… Dhs65. Open Sun-Wed 9am-11pm, Thu-Sat 9am-1am. Dubai Festival City Mall (04 284 3456); City Walk (04 330 2473).
The Berry Slim Smoothie at Walnut Grove Because not all milkshakes need to look mind-boggling and be comprised of 99 percent ice cream. This smoothie offering from Walnut Grove is made from mixed berries, banana and almonds blended with double thick Greek yoghurt and vanilla gelato. This is a smoothie-slash-milkshake we can get behind, and it shouldn’t leave you feeling toooooo full at the end of it. If it doesn’t, order two, just to make sure that does the trick. Dhs35. Open Sun-Wed 8.30am-10pm, Thu-Sat 8.30am-11pm. City Walk, Al Safa (04 344 4441).
The Cookie Shake from Black Tap Oreo milkshakes are so on-trend at the moment that if you’re a milkshakery not offering some sort of cookies and cream concoction, you get funny looks from all the other milkshakeries. Black Tap makes one heck of an effort to blow its Oreo-ish competitors out of the milky waters with this beast. Oreos and ice cream are blended with a short measure of milk, then poured into a glass lined with frosting and Oreo crumble, topped with whipped cream and, for good measure, an Oreo ice cream sandwich. It’s enough Oreo for a lifetime, or until the next time you venture anywhere near Jumeirah Al Naseem. Dhs65. Open Sat-Wed 11am-midnight, Thu-Fri 11am-12.30am. Jumeirah Al Naseem, Umm Suqeim (04 422 9904).
The Katy Perry at Ella’s Creamery There’s a vanilla milkshake in there somewhere. Yes, we know it’s blue, but it is vanilla. Honest. Meanwhile, bubblegum frosting, pink candyfloss and whipped cream sit atop the eye-catching drink (if you can call it that), which is easily Dubai’s most lurid. Sweet and sour candy, a lollipop, jelly beans and more make this a shake that is bound to keep you jabbering and twitching all night. Dhs55. Open Sat-Wed 11am-11pm, Thu-Fri 11am-midnight. Riverland Dubai, Dubai Parks And Resorts, Jebel Ali (04 886 0807).
Vanilla Cheesecake Shake at Walnut Grove This shake in particular has caught our attention. It’s sweet, it’s creamy, there’s plenty of caramel and the flavours work extremely well with the yummy, freshly baked, vanilla-flavoured cheesecake that’s proudly perched on top like a mother cheesecake looking after all her little cheesecakelings. Then choose between the fresh strawberry and the strawberry-flavoured lollipop to top it all off. Pure, cheesecakey indulgence. Dhs49. Open Sun-Wed 8.30am-10pm, Thu-Sat 8.30am-11pm. City Walk, Al Safa (04 344 4441).
