All about the A-list crowd? Here are some known hangouts of the rich and famous
Time Out Dubai staff
Celebrity-spotting is almost the national pastime in Dubai. And with DIFF bringing a hoard of Hollywood stars to town from Wednesday December 6 to Wednesday 13, here are the top spots to snap the celeb selfie that your Instagram is crying out for.
1 Barasti If you were at the mother of all Dubai beach bars for New Year’s Eve in 2013, you might have been lucky enough to catch a surprise appearance from rapper and actor Will Smith, who even jumped on stage and performed his 1998 hit Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It along with long-time collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff. More recently, we spotted Brazil football legend Ronaldinho enjoying this ever-popular spot (though we can’t confirm a report that Tom Hanks was giving frisbee lessons at the megabar in 2016…). Open daily 11am-1.30am. Le Méridien Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Al Sufouh (04 318 1313).
2 BASE Dubai This d3 venue was the scene of recent visits from social media megastar (so says his business card) Logan Paul and pop goddess Jennifer Lopez, following her November gig at Dubai’s Autism Rocks Arena. Angry TV chef Gordon Ramsay and world heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua were also visitors this year. Cameras at the ready. Open Thu-Fri 10pm-4am. Dubai Design District, Ras Al Khor Road (055 313 4999).
3 Cavalli Club The name above the door, belonging of course to designer Roberto Cavalli, is famous enough, but this decadent venue is a regular after-dark haunt for the showbiz great and good, including diminutive pop giant Justin Bieber, who rocked up after his Autism Rocks Arena gig this year, and Ms Lopez. Open daily 8.30pm-3am. Fairmont Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 332 9260).
4 folly by Nick & Scott After celebrity chef Scott Price was shocked by a kitchen visit from Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs – and with Price once working for regular Dubai visitor Ramsay – you could be seeing stars at this restaurant. Open Sun-Wed noon-2.30pm, 5pm-11pm. Fri-Sat 12.30pm-3.30pm, 5pm-11pm. Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim (04 430 8535).
5 McGettigan’s JLT An unlikely spot if you want to spy David Beckham or Kim Kardashian perhaps, but the Irish bar did have a visit from a certain Edward Christopher Sheeran, or Ed to his mates, back in 2015. Maybe if you hang around long enough, you might spot Ben Howard or James Arthur rocking up to this popular JLT venue with guitar in tow. Open daily noon-3am. Bonnington Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Cluster J, JLT (04 378 0800).
6 Nobu The twice-aforementioned J-Lo has probably now returned to her US$40 million Bel-Air mansion after her Dubai gig. But before she departed, she enjoyed world-class Japanese fusion cuisine at this regular celeb hangout, even meeting the eponymous super-chef at her table. The favourite Dubai restaurant of huge names, including football great Zinedine Zidane and hip-hop star Usher is as good as any place at which to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Open Sat-Wed 6pm-11.30pm; Thu 6pm-12.30am; Fri noon-4pm, 7pm-12.30am. Atlantis The Palm, Palm Jumeirah (04 426 2626).
7 Nusr-Et If viral star Salt Bae, aka Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe, is not enough of a celebrity for you, hang out at this exclusive eatery at the Four Seasons in Jumeirah for the chance to spot huge names such as Leonardo DiCaprio, who recently had his meal seasoned by Bae himself. Various royalty have also been greeted by the internet sensation, while Rihanna donned a T-shirt featuring a picture of his trademark flourish. Open daily noon-midnight. Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach, Jumeirah Beach Road (04 407 4100).
8 Sean Connolly at Dubai Opera We have no idea if Britpop star and walking soundbite Liam Gallagher is a fan of all things operatic, but the former Oasis frontman was spotted at this restaurant atop the city’s performing arts centre. Though, if you read his comments in summer on taking selfies with fans, you might give this particular famous face a wide berth. Open daily noon-2am. Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai (04 437 6073).
9 WHITE Dubai Of course, Iggy Azalea, Ne-Yo and Tinie Tempah performed at this al fresco night spot recently, but we want to see our fave celebs partying, not working. Rapper Akon, a regular in the emirate, was spotted here recently, while fellow hip-hop star Lil Jon also popped up this year. Open Thu-Sat 11pm-3am. Meydan, Nad Al Sheba (050 443 0933).
