We traverse the islands to bring you 11 of the best watering holes
101 Dining Lounge and Bar There are few more idyllic spots in Dubai. A raft-like space stationed at the furthest tip of the Palm’s western frond, 101 is an utterly isolated oasis of tranquillity. With the setting, things, as expected, don’t come cheap, but this isn’t the place to visit for a run-of-the-mill beverage. One for when you’re feeling flush. Open daily 11.30am-2am. One&Only The Palm, Palm Jumeirah (04 440 1030).
Ají Nestled along the Palm’s beach-facing Club Vista Mare, Ají ticks all the boxes. The Nikkei restaurant and bar promises creativity, flavour and value for money, as well as stunning views of the city’s shoreline. Open daily noon-1am. Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeirah (04 552 0244).
Barrel 12 A classic sports bar with seven screens showing all the best sporting action from around the world. It has a top atmosphere on match day, or you can enjoy a more laid-back vibe during the week. Happy hour runs daily from 4pm until 7pm. Open Sat-Wed noon-midnight; Thu-Fri noon-2pm. Palm Views East, Palm Jumeirah (04 552 4000).
Bidi Bondi This laid-back surf-themed venue is a popular spot to watch the game on a Saturday afternoon and it serves up large helpings of decent Antipodean-themed pub food. There are plenty of seats indoors and out, and prices are keen for the Palm (around Dhs40 for a decent glass of grape). Open Sat-Wed 10am-midnight; Thu-Fri 10am-1am. Shoreline Apartments, Palm Jumeriah (04 427 0515).
Breeze Beach Grill This spot has a prime location at the corner of Club Vista Mare, meaning you can have a wander down onto the sand, if the huge patio area, or the inside seating doesn’t do it for you. The food menu here is varied and includes salads and burgers, and happy hour is every day between 4pm and 7pm, featuring half price and buy-one-get-one-free deals. Open Sun-Thu noon-midnight; Fri-Sat 9am-1am. Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeirah (04 568 3000).
El Chiringuito This beach club at Rixos The Palm Dubai is the second branch of El Chiringuito, the first of which is in Ibiza. This spot brings some of the White Isle’s spirit to Dubai with international DJs playing regularly on weekends. Drinks are reasonably priced, ranging from Dhs45 for hops and grape to Dhs85 for mixed drinks. Open Sun 10am-7pm; Mon-Sat 10am-11pm; Rixos The Palm Dubai, Palm Jumeirah (04 277 9180).
Laguna Lounge Spread out over two levels of decking above the beach, this is a typical beach lounge, in that it’s chilled and decked out all in white. It serves up a range of interesting mixed beverages, too. Not one for a full-on party, just chill and enjoy the views. Open daily 8am-3am. Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa, Palm Jumeirah (04 455 5656).
Nobu This super-sleek Japanese restaurant is also well worth a visit for its bar. Moodily lit and serving up interesting mixed drinks, it’s a spot to head to whether you’re dining or not. Open Sat-Wed 7pm-11.30pm; Thu 7pm-12.30am; Fri noon-4pm (brunch), 7pm-12.30am. Atlantis The Palm, Palm Jumeirah (04 426 2626).
Senara This cute little British bar and restaurant overlooks Dubai Marina in the base of the Palm’s trunk and is an ideal spot for catching the sunset. There are also daily happy hour deals and it serves up a mean fish and chips. Open Fri-Sat 9.30am-11pm; Sun-Thu noon-1pm. Palm Views West, Palm Jumeirah (04 451 6460).
Sun& The terrace at Sun& is a very pleasant place to sit and chill and soak up Dubai’s winter sun, looking towards Dubai Marina and JBR. While the terrace is undeniably charming, inside doesn’t really match up, so nab a spot outside if you can. Sun& runs a decent happy hour from 5pm to 8pm on weekdays, from 5pm until 10pm on Fridays and from noon to 10pm on Saturday. Open Sun-Thu 4pm-midnight; Fri-Sat noon-midnight. Palm Views West, Palm Jumeirah (04 375 9333).
The Tap House Also at Club Vista Mare, The Tap House has a more traditional bar feel, granted, not many bars look out over the sands of a man-made island. Inside, it’s very industrial-looking, with exposed bricks, metal pipes on the ceiling and those old-school filament lights hanging everywhere. Outdoors, you get the delightful sea views. There are also plenty of screens to catch some sport while you get stuck into some proper pub grub. Open daily noon-2am. Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeriah (04 514 3778).
