We pick Dubai’s top karaoke spots for a night of singalongs and hoarse throats
Karoake has made something over a comeback over the past couple of years in Dubai, with several new places dedicated to the art (yes, art) in New Dubai joining long-established bars in and around the older end of town. Whether you consider yourself a bit of a Whitney, or can barely even carry a tune, these are the karaoke bars to get to, now.
RedRoom Over the past year or so, Al Habtoor City has become one of the city’s foremost destinations for a top night out. From La Perle, to The 44, DOME, The Rose & Crown. This lounge-meets-karaoke bar is a top place for a sing-song. There are six private karaoke suites, in total, including one large VIP karaoke booth if you’re throwing a particularly extravagant bash. There’s also a whole night of communal karaoke in the middle of the lounge every Wednesday. Open Tue-Sat 5pm-2am. The Atrium, Al Habtoor City, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 437 0033).
Kung Korean Restaurant and Karaoke This really authentic feeling Asian karaoke night offers up various rooms depending on how many of you will be going blue in the face. Prices range from Dhs160 per hour if there are just a few of you, up to Dhs180 for ten to 15 people, and Dhs280 for anything up to 25 people. It’s open until 2.30am, you can get food and drink brought to your booth, and the décor is pretty cool too. What more could you possibly want? From Dhs160 per hour. Daily, 7.30pm-2.30am. Byblos Hotel, Barsha Heights (04 448 8000).
Lucky Voice This is a top night out that you need to go to, right now. It’s crazy, it’s pumping, the karaoke booths are full of inflatables, a minibar and about a bajillion songs in the up-to-the-minute library. Get a free hour after Friday brunch or book in for a singalong sesh anytime. It’s favourite ways of seeing out an evening, and give it just a few minutes in a booth and you’ll know exactly why. From Dhs100 per hour. Grand Millennium Hotel, Barsha Heights (800 58259).
Makati Comedy Bar Anywhere that puts laughs in its name is alright by us. Makati, found at the Asiana Hotel in Deira, has comedy on one hand, karaoke on the other, and puts them together splendidly. In between sets from comedians, you can get up and stretch your lungs if you’re something of a show(wo)man. If you’re less of an exhibitionist, and prefer to show off your skills in slightly more closed off surroundings, there are also a range of private suites you can sing in and rent out. Open daily 7pm-3am. Asiana Hotel, Deira (04 238 7777).
Miss Tess Ready for one of the most genuinely fun-loving nights around? Asian Invasion at Miss Tess in Taj Dubai is a ladies’ night, a night brunch, and offers something spectacularly called a “karaoke shower”. The premise is pretty much exactly what it sounds like – karaoke, in a shower. Not a running one, of course. Dhs178 (soft drinks), Dhs248 (house drinks). Wed 8pm-11pm. Taj Dubai, Business Bay (04 438 3121).
Miss Wáng If you’ve not spent much time up in Bur Dubai’s Majestic Hotel Tower, then you have long been missing out on a pumping night out. From a top Greek meal at Elia (highly commended at our 2018 Restaurant Awards), to the classy lounge bar Room 108, to the no-holds-barred Miss Wáng, which is effortlessly one of the coolest bars around. There’s some great live music, good grub and there’s even a free karaoke room if you’re a guest already staying in the hotel. Get ready to sing your heart out after some top Asian street food dishes. Open daily 6pm-3am. Majestic Hotel Tower, Mankhool Road, Bur Dubai (04 501 2567).
Pegasus It’s windowless, so you automatically lose your sense of time, especially when Hit Me Baby One More Time has come on for the fourth time. This largely-Filipino bar has a remarkably good song selection, and the karaoke sessions run from 6pm until 9pm every day, in a big group, in the middle of the bar. Bring your nerve. Free. Daily 6pm-9pm. Chelsea Plaza Hotel, Satwa (04 398 3333).
Tri!beca Kitchen + Bar It might not technically be considered karaoke, per se, but this funky JBR bar (inspired by memories of the New York district carrying the same name) has recently launched Lip Sync War, which replaces its old hip hop karaoke nights. The premise is simple, be the best at miming the song (which suits us tone-deaf ones out there), win your round and then be invited back to a season-ending night in Abu Dhabi where you can win Dhs1,000 in cool, hard cash. It’s time to get practicing that dance routine. Free. Fri, 8pm-11pm. Until May 4. A Ocean View Hotel, JBR (050 345 6067).
