Garhoud’s best bars: where to drink near Dubai Airport
Staying near DXB? We pick out top spots for a drink near the airport
Biggles Given that it’s located near the airport, it’s somewhat fitting that this pub – named after the fictitious pilot and adventurer – has a distinct aviation theme. From the parachutist hanging from the ceiling, to the aircraft paraphernalia dotted around the bar. Of the many British-themed pubs in Dubai, this one stands out. Even the bar staff are kitted out in pilot uniforms, which is a fun touch. It’s a lively night out if you visit when there’s live entertainment, which varies throughout the week Open daily noon-2am. Millennium Airport Hotel, Garhoud (04 702 8844).
Cactus Jack’s This quirky Mexican saloon-themed bar at the Millennium Airport Hotel is your archetypal theme bar. Think giant cacti, horse saddles, terracotta flooring, Latin mixed drinks and everything quintessentially Mexican. There are some bargain drinks to be had, too. There’s happy hour every Sunday offering two-for-one on mixed drinks. There are also deals on buckets of hops and two-for-one on drinks, plus 20 percent off food from Sunday to Wednesday for airline crew. Open daily 6pm-3am. Millennium Airport Hotel, Garhoud (04 702 8855).
Cu-ba At Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, you’ll come across a rooftop bar that has some stunning views out across Dubai Creek and, in the distance, Downtown Dubai. For sundowners it’s magnificent, and its outdoor terrace defines it, so get in fast before it’s a little too warm. There’s low-slung, comfy sofas and seating, and while drinks are priced to match its premium view, there’s a regular happy hour that brings down the cost to a reasonable amount. Open Sat-Wed noon-2am; Thu-Fri noon-3am. Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, Garhoud (04 230 8458).
D70 This relatively unassuming bar could easily be missed if you’re wandering around the grounds of the Millennium Airport Hotel. A mixed drinks and sparkling grape bar, this place has the USP of having female-only staff. The interior is plush, and the terrace overlooks the central pool and fountain of the hotel. There’s a daily happy hour with two-for-one on select drinks, and it’s a nice spot for a pre-dinner apéritif if you’re in the Garhoud area and want something a little fancy. Open daily 6pm-2am. Millennium Airport Hotel, Garhoud (04 702 8743).
Mahec by Satish Arora This trendy Indian restaurant and bar is a perfect pit stop at Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre if you’re after a cracking bite to eat and a drink. With grub that fuses classic flavours and modern techniques, you’ll also be able to get your hands on one of two daily happy hours with 40 percent off selected beverages from 5pm until 7pm, and again at 11pm until 2am. Plus, if you head here on a Wednesday, ladies can get three free drinks from 10pm until 2am. Open daily 12.30pm-3pm, 6.30pm-2am. Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Garhoud (04 702 2615).
The Dubliner’s A nook and crannies Irish pub that has a real salt-of-the-Earth vibe and a genuine Irish feel. Tonnes of screens line the walls and you’ll also find the Celtic supporters club here when kick-off comes around. It’s great for the match, and it’s a great spot for a few casual drinks. This place can get a bit rowdy at kick-off, but it never falls short of being a place that’s full of life, and it’s loads of fun. Probably one that’s a bit more exclusive for footie fans. Open daily noon-2am. Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Garhoud (04 702 2455).
The Irish Village Ah, The Irish Village. This longstanding Garhoud spot dominates not only the area’s bar scene, but a large part of Dubai’s pub scene in general. It’s been crowned our Pub of the Year on numerous occasions, for many a good reason. It’s home to one of Dubai’s most wonderful pub garden areas, which in cooler weather are perfectly for lounging around in with a pint of the black stuff. You’ll be able to find a very reasonably priced pint here, as well as some great pub grub, some huge live music acts, the odd festival and many a brilliant bash. The Irish Village has been popular for more than 20 years, so this is one to put on your list, now. Open Sun-Thu 11am-1am; Fri-Sat 11am-2am. Garhoud (04 239 5000).
Warehouse Home to one of the city’s broadest collections of hops, you’re almost certain to find the perfect pint at this lively bar which is also home to one of the city’s most spectacular party brunches on a Friday afternoon (it’s brilliant, action-packed, and riotous fun). Split over two levels, as well as having a huge pub garden and terrace area (which is home to some cracking barbecue grub) there are deals and entertainment to be had throughout the week, including ladies’ nights, happy hours, deals for airline crew, and a whole lot more to explore. Open daily noon-3am. Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Garhoud (04 455 9166).
