• The low-lighting gives it a special charm • It’s right on the water, looking over to the city • Chinese restaurant Dai Pai Dong. Go yourself and find out Location: The hotel is on Al Maryah Island and is connected to Galleria Mall. It’s a short drive to and from the existing city centre and Saadiyat Island. It’s a great location and is perfectly placed overlooking the water, giving rooms, bars and restaurants a fantastic view. Character: The hotel is very cool and is stunning from the outside. The tower is all reflective glass and curves. Once inside, we loved the low-lighting and dark tones of the lobby, which is flanked by flowing water and art. It has a very modern take on Arabian hospitality, which somehow seems western and Middle Eastern at the same time. Service: Brilliant. From the moment we pulled up outside, every single person we encountered knew their stuff and were friendly with it. Special mention has to be made of the barmen in Dai Pai Dong who were intuitive, smart and skilled. All of the staff in the lobby were excellent too. Rooms: Everything about the rooms oozes sophistication. They’re very contemporary, with iPads to control the TV, music and lights, a classy Villeroy & Boch bath tub (and toiletries) and a huge TV. The modern elements are combined with Arabian touches however, with modern regional artwork on the walls reminding us where we are. When we walked into our room we loved the floor-to-ceiling windows (a feature of every room) that flooded it with light and made thelarge space seem even bigger. All of the other usual amenities (Wi-Fi minibar, espresso machine) were there too. There was everything you could need in the room, which was more than just a place to lay your head at the end of the day. Restaurants & bars: Some of the best food we’ve eaten in the UAE was in the hotel, especially at Chinese restaurant Dai Pai Dong. It served a modern take on traditional Chinese street food and is an absolute must-try. Indian restaurant Spice Mela is another Time Out favourite, as is Spanish venue La Cava. Breakfast is served at Aqua, which has amazing views of the city. Unfortunately we couldn’t try everything the Rosewood has to offer, but if the rest reaches the standards of those we did sample, you won’t be disappointed. Facilities: The hotel offers a limo service if you’re arriving in Abu Dhabi by plane, a butler service is available and there are male and female salons, so you’ll be pampered and looked after as much or as little as you like. The hotel’s Sense Spa is excellent, one of our favourites in the UAE. We loved the relaxation area with whirlpool, cold mist shower, steam room and sauna. We also had a 60-minute massage, which is where the rosewood itself really comes into play. When our therapist showed us the truncheon-like stick she was going to use on us, we have to admit we were a little taken aback. However, it was a wondrous thing. Using the rosewood on our back and shoulders, it really got into all the muscles and knots to work every last ounce of tenseness out. We got a real going over, but it is thoroughly recommended. Activities: There’s all of the restaurants of course, so eating is one activity you should definitely make time for. If retail therapy is also your thing, then head for the luxury Galleria Mall, which is adjoined to the hotel. Saadiyat Beach Club and Golf Club is close by if you’d rather spend a day by the sea or on the course. There’s also the Rose Buds kids’ club for families to take advantage of. We decided to stay at the hotel and spent a morning at the pool, which has a great bar, good music and an amazing view out over the city. The metal trees were also very cool.
