The ever-popular Ibis is a fuss-free affair; there’s no pool and facilities are minimal, but the hotel has invested its time and energy into the fundamentals, developing a sophisticated feel for a three star.

The lobby is elegant, simple and dotted with Philippe Starck furniture, although the rooms, at 20sq m (215sq ft), are small – and offer pretty drab glimpses of the Dubai World Trade Centre apartments. Nonetheless, it’s a sound choice for the shoestring traveller who has no desire for fancy extras and is fantastic value for money, which is difficult to find in Dubai.
