We track down the hippest stuff for the coolest kids
Not blankety blank
Forget the standard, flouncy pastels and insipid whites usually associated with receiving blankets – and check out these babies! Made of deliciously soft fleece by Koala Baby, these gorgeous, two-tone blankets for buggies, prams or just being cuddled up in, say it all. Boys Rock! in camouflage green, and Girls Rule! in leopard print pink, are sentiments every parent can fully appreciate. And, they’re just so cool too!

This clown rocks
A fabbie balancing game, Coo-Coo is a vibrant, wooden clown who wobbles precariously on his rocking platform. He needs help keeping all his juggling balls in the air (don’t we all?). A great way to teach problem-solving, balance and teamwork as well as patience and tidying up, this is a toddler toy that the whole family will want to play. Made by eco-company Blue Orange, the firm promises to plant two trees for every one it cuts down.

Have sum fun
Good old-fashioned mental arithmetic is a dying art, so dust off the old grey matter and join your little brain boxes in a game of Sounds Fun. Two games in one, the first is rather like bingo for clever folk, where you listen to the sums on a CD then have to find the answer on your board (pretty tricky, we can tell you). In the second, players have to shout out their answer and the first to get 10 sums correct wins. Our heads hurt just thinking about it…

We’ve got the (lady)bug
Okay – so we admit you probably won’t need these until the winter – unless, of course, you’re off to cooler climes during Dubai’s scorching summer. But we just couldn’t resist this gorgeous Ladybird raincoat, wellies and umbrella combo by Kidorable. And if you do indulge, your tot will be in good company, as these are the official rain-ready items favoured by the tots’ queen of style, Suri Cruise.

Message on a bangle
Make a statement with these colourful and creative, do-it-yourself bangles – perfect for whiling away a few hours indoors. Kids can spell out their names, messages, or anything else they feel strongly about on bracelets, necklaces, key chains, ponytail bangles and even pet collars, but what makes the Shains stuff really cool is that all the materials are recycled and recyclable, with up to 10 per cent of net profit going back to environmental organisations.

Ibn Battuta Mall – a big hit with the buggy brigade by virtue of the fact everything is on one floor – has four new magnets for families. New openings include old UAE-wide favourite Babyshop’s new store and funky furniture store Çilek – the place to head if you’re after a racing car bed or a cosy princess palace for your little darlings. Peekaboo has just opened a new branch in the Persia Court, while The Little Gym, a world-renowned fitness and development centre for kiddies aged four months to 12 years, is set to attract mini sports buffs with its karate, gymnastics and sports classes.
