Decorating for kids

Fed up with boring magnolia walls but don’t want to get the paint out?

Moveables by Little Chipipi

Perfect for the creatively-challenged, these stickers can be moved and restuck again and again, giving any parent confidence to revamp their child’s room. Animal Alphabet – featuring all the letters, some with cuddly peek-a-boo characters plus a few added stars for decoration – created a delightful slapdash yet educational effect on our daughter’s wall. Bold and colourful, little ones will love them, but the stitched look adds a textural effect which will appeal to style-conscious parents.

Any wrinkles can easily be fixed, but the moveables lost their stickiness in our (pretty brutal) toddler scrunch test and our paintwork suffered slightly when they were ripped off without due care. That said, they do fit snugly on the wall and, in more gentle adult hands, survived several sticky journeys around the room. With loads of simply chic designs to choose from (including space ships, butterflies, sparkly fairies and
transport) there’s something for all ages.

Love Mae Decals

If you’re fussy about what you have on your walls, opt for these unique fabric decals. Good to the touch, they make any room look expensive with their elegant pastel designs. Dubbed the perfect décor solution for the ‘transient life,’ these decals may look delicate but the innovative fabric ensures good durability – even at the mercy of a sticky-fingered four-year-old. He even scrunched one into a ball – it smoothed back perfectly onto the wall. Washable on both sides, they are simple to apply and remove, leaving no wall marks. The Twitter range for boys set contains an owl, six birds and a few leaves with a jute string to perch them on, while the Dress Up Dolls set comes with loads of clothes for great interactivity for girls.

HABA Wallstickers

Let junior drive himself up the wall with endless highways, corners, multi-coloured cars, road signs and traffic signals in these ‘peel and stick’ Traffic decorations. The stickers are removable, and, should you take a wrong turn on your layout, they do peel off fairly easily with care, but aren’t intended to be pulled on and off at will (the third time we tried to move them they began to look a little dog-eared) so once they’re on, they’re on. Small enough to accessorise other areas (bed heads, book cases etc) we loved that you can mix and match with furniture and accessories from the same HABA ranges (Mia is a pink and red hearts range for girls). A great value way to add colour and build a theme.

Wall Cravings

A pack of around 60 out-of-this-world vinyl stickers, Wall Cravings’ designs, although repositionable in the initial stages of application, are not supposed to be removed and played with. The stickers come in sheets, so cut them into individual pieces and experiment with different layouts before you start. Once applied (a process made simple by the plastic credit card scraper provided) the super-sticky shapes cling smoothly to the walls without wrinkles – and stay there. In fact, we managed to create an entire, extremely impressive space scene in just under one hour, which, although in full reach of small fingers, is yet to be unpicked several weeks later and has considerably brightened up an otherwise boring room.

Fun To See

With their cartoon-esque shapes and pastel colours, these 96 stickies are perfect for a tot’s first room. The assigned names (think Sabrina seahorse and Walter whale) offer little ones lovable characters they can
imaginatively interact with, sticking and resticking them (even after multiple movements, they were sticky). These are practical for parents who want to decorate an entire room in minutes: create a magical marine mural for babies, a bright jungle safari scene for boys or a fairytale garden for girls. Winning silver in the ‘practical pre-school awards’, these washable pre-cut stickers stick flat to the wall upon contact. Great value-for-money, interactive and simple.
