Meet the Mikullases
We meet Emilie, Marc and little Maximilian Mikulla, who live in Tecom
How long have you lived in the area?
We moved to Tecom in the July of 2011. Before Max was born, Marc and I moved four times in just three years! We needed to set down some roots, and Tecom was a good choice.
What made you choose the neighbourhood?
Frankly, the Springs (where we were before here) wasn’t as great as we first thought. When we were left without any air conditioning in Max’s room for several days, we decided it was time to move. Tecom has brand new apartments and is more affordable than a lot of neighbourhoods. We have a large, three-bedroom apartment, all with ensuite bathrooms – which our visitors appreciate – and the price is reasonable. The location is great too. Marc and I work in Silicon Oasis, and while Tecom isn’t exactly next door, it takes us just 20 minutes to get there; and there’s never any traffic.
What’s so great about it?
Well, we love that everything is new. We’re the first tenants in our apartment so it really feels like home. And the facilities are outstanding – there’s a beautiful, large pool on the 17th floor where we take Max on weekends, as well as a very well-maintained play area on the ground floor. The quality and design of the apartment is also really nice – we especially love that each bathroom has a rain shower. And the location is brilliant. We’re right next to Sheikh Zayed Road and Barsha so it’s five minutes to MOE and Barsha Park, Marina Mall and just 10 minutes to Dubai Mall – I don’t think you can be more centrally located.
Is there anything you would change about where you live?
Tecom is still a very new neighbourhood. When I moved to Dubai four years ago, I stayed in a serviced apartment in Tecom and there was nothing but sand and a few buildings – it’s really come a long way since then. Every week you’ve got a new café or restaurant popping up; there are now a few nail and hair salons, so the place is developing nicely. Still, the neighbourhood could do with more green spaces. Hopefully that will just be just a matter of time.
Has it been easy to meet other mums since you’ve moved to the area?
To be honest, I haven’t met any other mums in Tecom, but that’s probably because I work. But I do meet a lot of mums in my job and through yoga classes.
What does Max like the best about the neighbourhood?
Max is still small, but the one thing he absolutely cannot get enough of is the pool. He’s a water baby – whether it’s the bath, the pool or the beach, he just loves it. He also has a great time when we take him to Mini Monsters. He really enjoys being with other kids and getting lost in the sea of bright yellow balls.
Has Max started school already?
Yes, Max has been going to nursery since he was 10 months old. The Kensington Nursery opened a new branch in Silicon Oasis. This purpose-built nursery is just fantastic – its got great facilities, such as a music room, computer room, and soft-play areas. The food is prepared fresh everyday and the staff are absolutely brilliant. They treat the kids as if they were their own. I love the place and so does Max. And it’s really convenient as we work five minutes away.
What about shopping, where is convenient in Tecom?
Tecom has everything we need. There’s a Park’n’Shop that I can walk to, a small Carrefour that’s open round the clock, and a Choithram’s across the road in the Greens. We still do our big grocery shopping in the Springs Town Centre out of habit and because we love grabbing a bite at Shakespeare’s – some of the waiters have known Max since he was a baby. And when we don’t feel like shopping or cooking, we walk next door to La Gaufrette – they have fantastic pancakes!
