Food stations serving hot dogs, popcorn and other tasty treats are also on hand to feed hungry film buffs.

Go mad at Modhesh World
This year, the little yellow fellow has moved from his usual haunt at Dubai Airport Expo to the Dubai World Trade Centre. There are heaps of activities, including funfair rides and games for kids of all ages, as well as playgrounds, soft play areas, the latest video games and a 4D cinema. It’s all indoors and is fully air conditioned, too, so your kids can let off steam around this huge venue without getting heatstroke.
Dhs10 per person; free for kids under two. Open Sat-Wed 10am-10pm, Thu 10am-midnight, Fri 2pm-1am. Until August 25. Dubai World Trade Centre, www.dubaicalendar.ae (600 545 555).

Ramadan Kareem!
It seems likely that today will be the first day of the Holy Month, so get into the spirit of the season by checking out My First Ramadan by Karen Katz. Children follow the story of a young boy as he experiences Ramadan with his family.

Hang out on the Sky Trail
If you have a little monkey in your midst (or feel in need of an adrenalin boost yourself) you’ve got to try this gravity-defying attraction for thrill-seekers down at Playnation, Mirdif City Centre. The Sky Trail takes the whole Playnation experience to new heights – literally. Suspended around 15 metres above Magic Planet, daredevil visitors get to zip, clamber and swing their way around the obstacle course. Don’t worry, you’re perfectly safe – the ‘fun engineers’ truss you up like a turkey in a secure harness before unceremoniously shoving you through a gate and across a zip line to start your scramble around the course.
Dhs70-100. 10am-midnight daily. Ongoing. Mirdif City Centre, www.playnationme.com (800 386).
Sunday 22
Go for a family-friendly iftar
Get into the spirit of the Holy Month and head to the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding for a traditional Emirati iftar in Bur Dubai’s oldest neighbourhood, Bastakiya. The evening begins at 15 minutes before sunset, with a breaking fast prayer followed by dates and refreshing drinks. Then iftar begins, with plenty of local flavours to experience, while the evening focuses on explaining the principles behind Ramadan. This is very popular, so book in advance.
Dhs135 (adults), children under 12 eat for free. 6.30-10pm. Bastakiya, Bur Dubai, www.cultures.ae (04 353 6666).
