Dr. Rita Kovesdi, Specialist Pediatrician at Health Bay Polyclinic talks us through runny noses in the summer, and how to prevent them.

Why are colds and flu’s so common in the summer?
Colds and flu’s are prevalent both in winter and summer as we all know by experience but somehow in the UAE they are more common in the summer because of the variation in the temperature between the inside and outside. This weakens the body’s immune system and gives an opportunity for bugs and viruses to invade. Air Conditioning also plays an important part in the spreading of these viruses in apartment complexes.

What is the best treatment for small children who have flu?
The best treatment for the kids is to tackle the symptoms for congestion and runny nose first. Steam inhalation, humidification, nasal spray, suction or anti histamines are always a good option. If a fever is present, this needs to be treated with anti-pyretics. Cough medicines are not recommended routinely.

Can the common cold/flu cause any serious health problems for children?
Absolutely. If the symptoms of cold and flu persist, they can invade the body leading to more serious problems like sinusitis, ear infections, lower airway infection and even pneumonia. It’s important for parents to be vigilant.

What steps should parents take at home to help their child feel better?
The symptoms should be treated and handled with proper medication and preventive measures. Also, it’s important that further spread of the disease is avoided by washing hands regularly and encouraging the kids to use handkerchiefs. Kids who have the flu should not be allowed to play with their siblings or go around kissing babies on the mouth etc. Temperature regulation is also important – this can help the body to be more resilient to catching colds and flu’s. Making sure that the kids are properly hydrated at all times is essential. Vitamin C also helps improve the immunity and obviously, rest is very important for the child to recover fast.

What tips should parents follow to help avoid flu’s and colds at home?
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Temperature variation should be avoided, proper hydration of your child especially during the summer months is essential, hygiene of the child - both parents and kids are encouraged to wash their hands properly. If a child has cold or flu symptoms he or she should not be sent to day care, school, nurseries etc to avoid the spread in the community. Rest plays a very important part in recovery, so make sure they are not overdoing it.
